NFL Speed and the NFL

Everyone has heard of Jesse Owens who in 1936 shit all over Hitlers "superior race" BS by winning 4 gold medals at those Berlin Olympics.

Well old Jesse was a 9.4 100 yard World Record holder.

Ok, up until 1976 we ran that hand timed 100 yard dash, in 1976 or was it 1977? we started running the 100m electro timing.

These are the pro footballers who ran 9.4 or faster.

Before I do that I must mention Houston McTear a Baker HS (Florida) running back who as a junior tied the World Record at 9.0, he also averaged over 13 yards a carry.

Ok the pros, actually what they did at the NCAA level

Olympian****

Bullet Bob Hayes.....9.1WR Florida A&M/Cowboys****
Willie McGee.....9.1WR Alcorn/Chargers
Frank Budd.....9.2WR Villanova/Eagles****
Cliff Branch.....9.2 Colorado/Raiders
Mel Gray......9.2 Colorado/Cards
Andrew Hopkins....9.2 SF Austin/Oilers/CFL
Ray Norton.....9.3WR San Jose State/Niners****
Henry Carr....9.3 ASU/Giants****
Travis Williams....9.3 ASU/Packers
Stone Johnson....9.3 Grambling.Texans....soon to be Chiefs****
Larry Burton....9.3 Purdue/Saints ****
Gerald Tinker....9.3 Kent State/Falcons
isacc Curtis .....9.3 Cal/Bengals
Len Willis....9.3 Ohio St/Vikes
JD Hill....9.3 ASU/Bills
Mark Duper ....9.4 NWLa/Dophins
Darrin Nelson....9.4 Stanford/Vikes
Butch Woolfolk....9.4 Michigan/Giants
OJ Simpson....9.4 USC/Bills
Joe Delaney.....9.4 NWLa/Chiefs....Won the NCAA 4x1 with Duper on anchor

Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson and Marcus Dupree all ran a 9.5 in HS.

I can't count Jim Hines and Tommie Smith they weren;t actually footballers, they were failed experiments.

Now that list of 10.??? for 100m is at least that long from 10.??? to sub 10.40.

Only track and field can compete with football when it comes to speed.

Sub 10.40 NCAAers who didn't make it in the NFL

Sultan McCullough USC
Leonard Scott Tenn
Xavier Carter LSU
John Capel Floroda

It was 1965, I was on my way home from track practice, walking with a buddy, his dad was our coach.

So as we came to his house, he....wanna Coke? I....sure.

So we walk into his kitchen, laying on the kitchen table........Track & Field News...magazine, it was his dad's.

I had to have it so he talked his dad into letting me cut out that little order thingy. I have boxes and boxes and boxes of old T&FN magazines. That is where I got all this stuff, that and simply keeping up with my fav sport like fans do.

Not a bot, no AI, not Autism, simply, a fan with a TON of experience..

I do know every NFLer who did anything in track, simply what serious fans do.

Do think most would be stunned to find out just how many footballers also ran track. Hell, Nick Chubb?

Darrell Green in action

When he ran his PR 10.08 that was the second fastest in the world that season.

He could also run the 400m, a 46ish there,

Later that season he did run in the NCAA champs, he came in 6th. But.....two future NFLers beat him, who?

He was national class in th 400 hurdles, also a good 110hh. Without question the fastest NFL QB ever.

No no he couldn't beat Vick in a 40 but would destroy him at 100m, he had that speed endurance.

Speaking of hurdlers and pro football..

Art Monk
Roger Craig
Quadry Ismail
Tyrone Wheatley
Gene Washington
Bernie Casey
Abe Woodson
those mentioned above
James Owens........Olympian
Renaldo Nehemiah......world record holder
Richmond Flowers.....cover of SI/Movie............why?
Earl McCulloch.....world ranked
Jerry Tarr.....top ranked in the world
Milt Campbell....top ranked in the world
Mel Renfro....world ranked
Jabari Greer

Three of those above ran on a World Record 4x1 team, who?

Richmond Flowers

40 vs 100m

A 40 is all about acceleration which is what ya want in football, fuck being able to sustain/maintain.

A 100m actually starts around 50ish meters, now you are hitting your top end that max velocity now.........at MV how long can you maintain/sustain it before that deceeleration phase kicks in? A 100m is won by those with superior speed endurance, those who can maintain/sustain that topend the longest.

Yes a fast footballer can hang with world class sprinters in a 40, but that's it. You must train for a 100m, yep, repeat 300's. Something just footballers don't do.

But, a lot of footballers were also college sprinters.

If we took....

sprinters, 100, 200 and 400
hurdlers 110/400
long jumpers
threw things
high jumpers

who were college/HS tracksters and footballers we are talking TONS.

Remember Christian "Nigerian Nightmare" Okoye, he was a stud discus thrower.

One of the first Olympic type speedsters in the NFL.

And he won a bronze and a silver.

His USF football team got a bowl bid for some southern bowl game, but.......don't bring Matson. No black players.

Yep..........fuck off with that.

Kenneth Walker while not a track guy his 4.38 40 says...........fast.

A sub 4.40 for a RB is outstanding.

Tyreek Hill has a 10.15 100m PR

NFL WR 100m times

Jacoby Ford Raiders 10.01
Bob Hayes Cowboys 10.06*** Actually superior to the above , being ran on a dirt track
Ron Brown Rams 10.06 also***
Alvis Whitted Raiders 10.07
Sam Graddy Broncos 10.09***
Willie Gault Bears 10.10
Mike Miller Packers 10.11

Gault and Miller beat Darrell Green in an NCAA 100m

Tyreek Hil 10.15

*** Olympian

STILL.....the fastest fullback/RB combo in history...

Florida A&M

Fullback...Bob Hayes WR 9.1
RB...Bob Paremore 9.4

Alfred Austin and Robert Harris joined those two on that Rattlers 4x1 team.

Paremore did get an NFL look, nope~~~

Maybe pads and a helmet slowed RGIII down more than others but he just didn't have that jaw-dropping speed that you saw with Vick and Lamar Jackson.

He seemed more in that second level of fast QBs with Vince Young and Kaepernick.

I mentioned he wasn't a Vick in a 40, but......he was a 13.5 110 hurdler, trust me neither Vick or Jackson come remotely close to that.

RGIII had the most valuable incredient in 100m sprinting.............speed endurance. Somethng Vick and Jackson don't have.

At 50ish RGIII is behind both then as they start to decellerate due to lack of speed endurance here comes RGIII.

You must train to get that speed endurance, it does not come natural.

RGIII ran the 400 hurdles that take MONSTER endurance, imagine just running 400m, now toss in 10 hurdles....ouch~~~~

RGIII has a 75 yard TD run, Vick at 61.

Herb Washington was the cat who erased the 22 who held that 5.9 60 world record with his 5.8. His start was incredible.

Steve Wiliams was a multi talented guy he ran 100, 200 and 400, that was not Washington.

I was there in Fresno....

Washington explodes out of the blocks at 50ish he has a good two yards on Williams, then it happened, here came Williams with his superior...........speed endurance.....he passed Washington around the 80 yard mark, stopping the clock.....9.1 to tie the world record. Washington at 9.3.
