I actually remember a thread similar to this on team liquid the starcraft site.

And it was actually from rekrul the pro gamer who turned into a big poker pro.

He basically became good friends with a guy online. But the guy kind of disappeared. Rekrul said he was worried and the people on the forum somehow made some phone calls to various places and eventually got in contact with his work I think. And the guy finally came back on and said he was just busy but was tripped out when people were worried about him
