Something I noticed about Dominick Cruz's commentary last night

I think he's probably has Asperger's. Not being a dick, he just seems to have really poor social awareness.
Nah I've known a fair amount of people with Asperger's and he seems way to confident to have it. People with Asperger's also have trouble looking at people in the eyes and I don't think Dom has a problem with that.
As a terminally online SherPshycologists I'd diagnose Dom with a mild form of autism or "high functioning autism" as some have called it. I also believe he has hidden family trauma possibly from his mother.

Cruz is a fucking terrible commentator. The fact that he called out DC for not "Studying the tape," despite Cruz making up stats on the fly is hilarious.

That's literally what Asperger's is though, it's just high-functioning autism. Actually they took the term "Asperger's" out of the DSM-V, it's all just the autism spectrum now

Maybe I've just missed it somehow but I don't recall hearing anyone call it "pummeling" before
Those of us with a wrestling background have heard about pummeling for underhooks so many times it doesn't even register anymore.
Edit: I guess I can't speak for ALL wrestlers, but if you grew up wrestling in the midwest it's probably a normal part of your vocabulary.

He seems to find a theme for the evening and hammers it into the ground

Last night he must have said "pummel" a hundred times. Don't think I've ever heard anybody use that word in this context before but we get it, when you're in a clinch battle you want to dig underhooks.

There was one card he did last year where he wouldn't stop talking about front chokes. Every other fighter was just waiting for an opportunity to sink in a nasty front choke. Guillotines or even ninja chokes.

Occasionally he says something smart or insightful but he's probably my least favorite commentator.
That's just how he analyzes fights. He thinks about the moves he would be doing. He must have noticed he was always talking about underhooks so he switched to pummel instead. All the commentators focus on the techniques they would be doing in that situation, if you pay attention to all their commentary they always talk about techniques they would be doing in those situations in terms of offense and defense. But the thing is, they have to factor in what the fighters style is they are analyzing and commentating on. Because the moves they would do, may not be the moves they would do. That's why they tend to say things that the fighters don't end up doing.

Yeah I just read that too your right . So I guess "high functioning autism" would be an okay way of describing it even though it's not a clinical diagnosis?
They do 3 "ASD levels" now so I guess he's level 1 ASD ?
Part of SherPshycology tho is not keeping up with the latest trends in the field. In SherPshycology homosexuality can be cured and "mongoloid" is still a proper term for most "retards".

Yeh, girls do not pummel apparently. Seems like all he went on about.

Also, it was clear that Dom was trying to be really polite to the other commentators for some reason. He apologized quite a few times for interrupting and other things like that. Maybe the producers told him to or something.
In that situation she didn't need to pummel. She's judo based and took advantage of those under hooks bear hug. That's why in a previous post I talked about knowing the fighters styles. Wrestlers would pummel and go for the underhooks, Judo base doesn't need to because they can throw/toss people from there. Which happened in the fight twice. Rose was grappling/clinching like she would with a wrestling/bjj based fighter, but with fighters that have Judo throws/techniques it's different. Those underhooks would be advantageous vs wrestlers/bjj but not Judo based fighters or with fighters that know Judo throws like Sambo fighters.

Yeh, I know all that. Jess had no clue what she was doing in there.

I'm just pointing out that Dom was going on about it a lot, and not just in that fight. He was doing it even more in the WMMA fight before that whenever Belbita and Paula clinched up.

To be fair to Dom, they could have used some pummeling in that fight lol. All they did in the clinch was hold the one position and reverse or hold each other against the cage.

You know, if you've got a good chin but poor head movement, things can just work out like that

Don't know about good chin, it was a kid swinging, never seen 16 year olds KO each other but maybe I went to the wrong school.

Rose knows what she's doing, that same strategy worked in her most recent fights. It's just that those tactics are used vs strikers, wrestlers, bjj fighters and not fighters with Judo/sambo base or fighters with judo throws. She should've realized that after the first throw and not engage again the exact same way. Could be more of a coaching/game plan issue. She would've had the advantage striking but instead went for a body lock and held on to it with no takedown attempts twice. You can't control Judo/sambo based fighters like that like you can with other style fighters. Usually that's how fighters wall and stall.

I'm sure the reason is because before he would say underhooks to the point it became a joke on forums because he says it in every fight. So he just switched to pummel as his new word now.

UFC 62 should have been called UFC 62: For Sure. Rogan must have used that expression a dozen times that night.

I meant Jess had no clue what she was doing trying to grapple like that with a Judoka. It's not like she didn't have a camp or that Egger is some unknown. She came in there and, whether it was the gameplan or not, tried to win in probably the last way she should have. The first time she got tossed she probably should have realized.

She is pretty disciplined and usually has a solid gameplan, so it was strange to see such a dumb approach out of her. It's not like she can't strike. I think she's a better boxer and would have had a better chance there even with the range difference.

Do hope she bounces back. Always a fan of hers.

And I hope pummel is Dom's new thing for a while. Love how he gets people worked up with this sort of crap haha.

A forum dedicating to fighting and “!pummel” is a mystery phrase.
Oh boy.

Dom Cruz has been focused on pummeling and underhooks for a long time now. It's basic thing, but a good thing for an analyst to talk about imo.

Explaining small details that are easy to miss but that are very important is one of Dom's biggest strengths.

Dom has two major weaknesses as a commentator imo:
1. He likes to make sure everyone realizes that he is knowledgeable. He's gotten a lot better at this.
2. Sometimes he forgets most fans are watching the fights to have fun. He needs to loosen up a bit.
3. He doesn't scream "he's hurt!!!"

Yes I agree, I was confused as well with the game plan for the fight. That's why I wasn't sure if it was the coaching/game planning that caused that result.

Personally, I think Cruz talks about constantly cause fighters don’t do it properly or accept position. For him the answer is simple. Get a underhook(s) to get off your back or control the clinch. Mentally, he puts himself in the fighters position and thinks how would I handle this situation.
