Something I noticed about Dominick Cruz's commentary last night

He seems to find a theme for the evening and hammers it into the ground

Last night he must have said "pummel" a hundred times. Don't think I've ever heard anybody use that word in this context before but we get it, when you're in a clinch battle you want to dig underhooks.

There was one card he did last year where he wouldn't stop talking about front chokes. Every other fighter was just waiting for an opportunity to sink in a nasty front choke. Guillotines or even ninja chokes.

Occasionally he says something smart or insightful but he's probably my least favorite commentator.

Dom Cruz has been focused on pummeling and underhooks for a long time now. It's basic thing, but a good thing for an analyst to talk about imo.

Explaining small details that are easy to miss but that are very important is one of Dom's biggest strengths.

Dom has two major weaknesses as a commentator imo:
1. He likes to make sure everyone realizes that he is knowledgeable. He's gotten a lot better at this.
2. Sometimes he forgets most fans are watching the fights to have fun. He needs to loosen up a bit.

He’s been a meme commentator ever since the “he’s tiring Khabib out with his face” -Rogan: “hmm, no, I think he’s getting smashed” moment. The trolling he suffered from that and the whiskey and cigs incident are still taking a toll on him. Maybe he’ll recover, but he always seems slightly irritated for some reason.

I look forward to the day he mentions shuffling multiple times... Needs more shuffle.

Yeh, girls do not pummel apparently. Seems like all he went on about.

Also, it was clear that Dom was trying to be really polite to the other commentators for some reason. He apologized quite a few times for interrupting and other things like that. Maybe the producers told him to or something.

It was especially a good thing when he talked about the very basic but underated move of letting yourself be hit in the face multiple times to exhaust your opponent.

Seriously, the first time this happened I thought Anik was apologizing to him for some reason because it's so out of character.

I do recall one of them saying last night, I think it was during the Joaquin Buckley - Abdul Razzak Alhassan fight, that rope-a-dope doesn't work in MMA and you actually have to return fire when you're getting punched.

Commentators get paid to talk about fights three hours at a time. So yeah, all of them say silly things now and then. Dom was clearly wrong, and hilariously so, in the McGregor fight, but it's not like no one has ever punched themselves out before.

Dom is one of my favourites. I like the kinda robotic way he breaks things down. Like all of you I've seen about a million fights at this point in my MMA fan career. I dont need colour commentary, to hear Bisping talking about his career while the fights on, or Anik plugging whatever sponsors he needs to.

I wanna hear insights that I have never heard before, to learn about techniques and how to counter them and so on. Commentary like that makes me more knowledgeable about the sport at the end of the day. I haven't learned Jack shit listening to Bisping or DC or Anik but Dom has taught me a bit.

In all honesty I don't like his face and that is a shitty reason to be irritated by someone. But I can't help it.
When I hear him I imagine him all smug and like this :

Are you being sarcastic, or do you normally watch on mute or something? DC talks about it ALL the time as well, and I even chuckle when Bisping says it. Not sure how you've missed literal YEARS of various commentators (primarily DC and Rogan, and Dom) talking about the importance of pummeling. Standard fare in grappling/wrestling world, which they're familiar with.

Maybe I've just missed it somehow but I don't recall hearing anyone call it "pummeling" before

NOT FIGHTER BASHING!

Dom is clearly some way along the autism spectrum and this is why some people don’t ‘get’ him. I agree with OP that he will sometimes latch onto a particular word or phrase or topic, and then he finds it difficult to get off of it. I still think he’s a great commentator though.
