some people want cauliflower ear?

How do you get it from BJJ? Is it from chokes mainly?
Repeated ear trauma - either actual blows to the ear, but (more likely in grappling) getting your ear smashed over and over again. This trauma causes the cartilage to separate from the overlying tissue of the ear. If the tissue isn't reconnected, the cartilage swells and malforms due to lack of nutrients (which can't be supplied by the now-disconnected tissue).

Yea my ears are jacked. If I could go back and wear headgear I would.

I never understood why some people want it. It attracts both negative and positive attention, both of which I'm not a fan of...

Everywhere I go I get questions like, "hey man are you a fighter?" "Where'd you wrestle?"
It's really annoying.

Very true. They are rare, but most would just associate them with Rugby and besides, employers aren't allowed to discriminate on the basis of your hobbies

What they are allowed to do and what they can easily get away with are two different things.

Why someone would want this is beyond me. Girls (well women) do not like it and neither do jobs (white collar ones). Additionally, most of society more than likely thinks you were born with a deformity or got into a bad accident - might even think you are deaf. The advantage of cauli - strippers and guys with tap out shirts will probably want to talk to you and think you are tough.

Honestly, I really think that the job aspect is highly over hyped. Unless you're an actor, model, or work for Abercrombie, no one is going to care that you have ugly ears, and if they do . . . well, you're probably better off without that job. As for the "fighter" stigma? If they figure out why your ears look like that, they probably either train or post on here pretending they do. Most people have no clue what cauliflower ear is.

I just drained my ears for the firs time today. How long should I stay off?

Im also thinking about getting an ear guard.

How anyone would want to get it I dont understand, I can understand the 'if I get it I get it' attitude though.

I was back on the mats the next morning, but I had a good headgear to wear. Really, though, the headgear is a must if you want to avoid getting it again. I just put mine on whenever my ears start hurting or get folded over, and I haven't had any problems since. If I hadn't started doing that, though, they'd be pretty bad by now.

Looks matter a lot when getting a good job. In most organizations good jobs require you to be in front of people (ie clients or other high level people). Your 'look' matters a lot. Im not saying its going to block you from getting all jobs but its not going to help and could stop you from getting some and/or being promoted into a position that requires a lot of face time.

I have a bit of cauliflower ear. I never cared that much, certainly not enough to take any time off training for it.

Well, in some countries where rugby or league is popular, cauliflower ears would get a pass at the job interview.
