There is a guys in my gym that just "broke" his year. It was all swollen and purple.

As we drilled technique my instructor was draining his year with a needle. And he was saying "i know you want this to happen since you were a blue belt"

And i

Some guys think it is a sign of hard work.
Like a striker would have broken nose and scars from stitches.
Some guys get them and some don't.

No way!

I wonder if these guys think about how that would effect future employment.

I don't get the whole badge of honor thing. Considering you could get it on your first day. Some people need/crave attention more than others.

Lol, really?

My ears are busted up and I work front desk in casinos, if they don't care I doubt anyone would. The one time I've ever heard of cauliflower holding anyone back is a job where they had to wear an earpiece, which didn't fit because of the cauli

in brazil, in the early 90s, some people would actually rub their ears against the mat to force them to become like this. it was almost like a fad, a prize, or a symbol, to show/prove you were some kind of bad boy...

and so there were probably many guys who trained for like 1-2 years, forced their ears to become like this, and never trained again...

in the mid 90s jiu jitsu was frowned upon by the media, and having cauliflower ears really was associated with violent behaviour, etc.

so, this fad ended and people began to try to avoid it....

nowadays, jiu jitsu and mma managed to get rid of its bad fame (at least for the most of it), and so cauliflower ears aren

I'll be upset if I get it honestly. I don't see how anyone would want it.

I have been training for about 5 yrs and I haven't smashed my ears up yet. They have really ached many times but they're still pretty like me......

sounds lame, I have been training over 5 years and don't have them, if it happens it happens. I don't need them, only a douche ego maniac would want them as a badge of honor.......

I've never heard or noticed cauliflower ears until I stated wrestling in high school. Even now I hardly noticed (unless it looks like someone took a bat to your ears). Maybe it's just me, but I don't go around looking for people with cauliflower and then feel a sense of adornment toward them. I do think they look disgusting and people who want it are complete morons in that sense.

my feelings = hurt :icon_cry2

I just drained my ears for the firs time today. How long should I stay off?

Im also thinking about getting an ear guard.

How anyone would want to get it I dont understand, I can understand the 'if I get it I get it' attitude though.

You know a lot of you want it at least a little bit.

A few years ago at my BJJ gym there was this white belt that started getting a cauliflower ear and then had the bright idea of rubbing them after sparring because he found them cool. Surely enough, they started to get huge and he had to get them drained from time to time in order to minimize the swelling. The guy made it to blue belt and then quit BJJ and amateur MMA altogether. He is now stuck with a cauliflower ear for good.

basically guard passing....and defending some attacks, such as triangles...

If I get them I get them is my stance. Part of me wants them because they look bad ass but another part of me thinks "No they don't look bad ass, they look fucking painful and can cause any number of difficult complications"

In this country it really doesn't affect job prospects since it is an equally if not more common ailment in Rugby, a highly regarded and respected sport here, often played by upper middle and upper class people.

A weird and interesting fact. My girlfriend finds them attractive so a silver lining if I do get them

Even still you dont see many people with them here

Very true. They are rare, but most would just associate them with Rugby and besides, employers aren't allowed to discriminate on the basis of your hobbies
