The back step has always struck me as an inherently unstable position, and I feel like the reason its not taken advantage of more often (by the guy on bottom) is simply due to relatively low exposure.


That sweep is sick. It just a shame he can't capatalize. 2 seconds after the sweep, Rafa is back on top.

Update. Today I was using distance half guard to Leites-style underhook with knee torque as my opening bid to set up DHG against the guy giving me problems.

I never actually got to DHG. I just bowled him over as soon as i got to my base with the underhook/knee torque/head position.

Rolled with another rando blue belt and instaswept him when he was scissor sweeping me via DHG recovery.

I haven't ever been formally taught this, but I've been finding that if I "over go" with scissor and butterfly sweeps, I usually have enough space to establish dhg. Been fun pissing people off who normally never sweep me, get excited then realize I was setting them up.
 
Yep, and you can come up in a much better passing position than you started
 
I have a question concerning the difference in the leg control I've seen in various deep half videos.

For instance, in Ryan Halls videos, he's hugging the right leg where he has his hooks.



And in Joe Mullings, he's hugging the near leg.



Is one better than the other? Is it just preference?
 
The first one lets you straighten out their leg more, and keep smore weight off your chest. The second one lets you use Gi grips more, makes it easier to move to the waiter sweep, and fucking glues them to you.
