Dragonlord’s Review of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY
(No Spoilers)

Bottom Line: A pleasant and watchable origin story but not really a must-see.

Production on Solo: A Star Wars Story has been plagued by controversies with original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller fired due to creative differences despite having shot almost the entire movie already. Veteran director Ron Howard was then brought in and reshot 70% of the movie. There were also reports that an acting coach was brought in for lead star Alden Ehrenreich.

So what’s the verdict? Solo is a serviceable, fast-paced origin story for one of the most beloved and iconic character in movie history. The film narrates how Han Solo became an infamous smuggler, how he and Chewbacca met, how he got the Millennium Falcon and how he accomplished the legendary Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

Unless you have an incredible story to tell, Solo is also an unnecessary spinoff movie as it is better to leave some of his past accomplishments to the imaginations of the fans. I don’t know if it’s Star Wars fatigue or The Last Jedi leaving a bad taste in my mouth but Solo didn’t really engage me for the most part. The movie just goes through the motions in a predictable way and there are retreads from past Star Wars movies as well as other sci-fi shows.

On the casting side, it’s all aces. Ehrenreich is terrific as Han Solo. His performance has a dash of Harrison Ford while simultaneously giving his own spin on the character. I initially thought he was wrong for the part after the casting announcement but Donald Glover as Lando Carlissian was amazing as Lando Calrissian. He was smooth, charming, funny and his sabaac game with Han was one of the best parts of the film.

Acting as Long John Silver to Han’s Jim Hawkins, Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) was a fun character. Beckett’s other crew members Val (Thandie Newton) and Rio Durant (voiced by Jon Favreau) were also endearing and memorable. Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) is a lovely character that you can’t help be enamored due to her beauty, intelligence and loyalty. L3-37 (voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) is a mixed bag. On one hand her sass and acerbic personality are humorous but then they introduce a new element that could create a major impact (or plot hole) in the Star Wars lore.

The good news is that Solo: A Star Wars Story is better and less offensive than The Last Jedi. There are a few visually great moments in here like the topsy-turvy train heist and the Kessel Run. The appearance of a surprise character at the end felt tacked on and forced, like trying to tie something unrelated to a bigger universe. Your enjoyment of Solo will vary depending on how big of a fan you are of Star Wars.

On a last note, seeing them recreate a young Han Solo and Lando Calrissian brings about my major complaint about Lucasfilm’s direction for the Star Wars universe after Disney bought them. Instead of recasting the iconic characters like Luke, Han and Leia with new actors and continuing the story a few years after Return of the Jedi, Lucasfilm screwed royally by being shortsighted and casting the aged actors for a cheap pop and revolving the new sequel trilogy around them and then tossing them aside like garbage. Imagine if Marvel Studios stopped making movies today. 30 years later, Marvel Studios makes a new batch of movies. You don’t cast Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth to reprise their roles and aged the characters just to fit the actors’ age. You cast new actors to play Iron Man, Captain America and Thor.

Preliminary Rating: 6.5/10 or 7/10

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Struggling to Hit $100 Million in U.S., Crashes Overseas

bIGDzdi.jpg

The Force is under siege. Disney and Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story is struggling in its debut at the Memorial Day box office, where it's coming in well behind expectations with an estimated three-day debut of $83.3 million-plus and projected four-day debut of $101 million (numbers will be updated Monday morning). That's even worse than forecasts earlier in the weekend.

The news is altogether grim overseas, where Solo rolled out in every major market save Japan. The movie — which made a high-profile stop at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month — is bombing with $65 million, including a dismal $10.1 million launch in China. The global bow is an estimated $148.3 million; many had thought it would fly to $300 million even though the Star Warsfranchise has never been an enormous player internationally.

The Han Solo origin pic is pacing well behind fellow standalone movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), which opened to $155 million in North America. Solo blasts off a mere five months after Star Wars: The Last Jedihit theaters, raising the possibility of fatigue. The movie's performance is sure to prompt Lucasfilm and Disney to reevaluate their strategy for the marquee franchise.

"We are all over it, and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did. We have a year and a half before Episode IX comes out," says Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis. "We've had so much success. The previous three Star Wars films did $4 billion worth of of buisness at the box office, so it doesn't feel like saturation is necessarily an issue, but we are still answering all of the questions.

Solo, directed by Ron Howard, is the first of the four titles in the revitalized series to brave the competitive summer box office, versus bowing in mid-December. The last three movies faced no immediate competition on their opening weekends, while Solo goes up against Deadpool 2, which launched a week ago and will take in a projected $53.5 million for the four-days.

Heading into the weekend, tracking suggested Solo would debut to $130 million-$150 million domestically. Box-office observers note that the movie is playing younger than other Star Wars installments, meaning it could lure families. The film nabbed an A- CinemaScore from Friday ticket buyers, a half-grade below the A bestowed the previous trio of films. Rogue One is the best comparison for Solo among the three new Star Wars films released by Disney and Lucasfilm.

Star Wars: Episode VII — Force Awakens, which revived the franchise after a long absence from the big screen and featured original stars from the first films, debuted to a then-record $248 million in December 2015, followed by Rogue One and, in 2017, $220 million for Last Jedi, the follow-up to Force Awakens.

Solo stars Alden Ehrenreich in the titular role opposite Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo and Paul Bettany. The story follows Han Solo as he teams with a band of misfits and mercenaries — including Lando Calrissian as well as a young Chewbacca — to stop the villainous Dryden Vos.

Howard famously took over directing duties when Lucasfilm fired Christopher Miller and Phil Lord over creative differences.

No other film dared to open nationwide opposite Solo. The movie's chief competition is Fox and Ryan Reynold's R-rated Deadpool 2, which grossed $42.7 million for the three-days. Through Monday, the movie's domestic total should be $218.2 million after earning $53.5 million for the four-day holiday.

In future Star Wars movies I want to see more scenes like we had in the space yacht.

All weird costumes and aliens, weird artifacts all over the place, music, people drinking and partying.

I want a Star Wars movie that isn’t anything like we’ve seen before.

but nothing in the Star Wars universe is so bad that it deserves the backlash it has gotten from you 2 dozen haters who keep stirring this sh*t up.

oh really?

I recently read online that the game of thrones show runners are gonna make a film that is geared towards adults and hardcore fans.

More violent and adult like. I really
Hope this is all true.

I would love an old republic trilogy or stand alone films. But I’m dying to see Nar Shaddaa.

Look guyz... my twin brother is just saying that you MCU superfans seem to have plenty of lee way to overlook your beloved MCU quirks, but then you come in here & put Star Wars under an Ultron Microscope.

I personally feel that we need to give our fantasy films a bit of space to do their thing. That can be taken to far for sure.... but nothing in the Star Wars universe is so bad that it deserves the backlash it has gotten from you 2 dozen haters who keep stirring this sh*t up.

I love Star Wars more than just about anyone I’ve come across and I loathe the last Jedi. It’s so bad and such a slap in my face and others who stuck with this for so long.

Cartoons, novels, movies, heck i even bought some nice side show collectibles statues. I watch and read almost all of it. The last Jedi was horrible and it was the most insulting thing they could’ve released.

The fact they didn’t give the fans what they wanted to see was damn insulting. No one wanted to see Luke Skywalker do nothing after 35 years.

This was so easy to knock outta the park, only someone trying to fuck it all up on purpose would give you TLJ.

Trust me Disney is worried and they’re very worried over the episode 9 boycott that’s coming next.

Bad example.

That scene is awesome.

I'd like to share that Sherdog is my first social media outlet that I've participated in. A little over 2 years ago here... I began interacting with others on line discussing MMA. I don't know how long It was before I got hip to Brother Dragon's movie threads but lets just say 1 year or so.

Prior to that I've never looked at reviews, had to write out critiques about a movie... heard the poison of the hater's OT agenda... none of that stuff.

I made it through the entire prequels without even knowing a single thing about how much hatred they got... & how much people resist Jar Jar. I dropped in & was shocked by it all. You hypercritical folk really know how to f*ck up a good movie experience imo. FFS just accept jar jar's place as comic relief (& potential Sith lord) & move on. Ep 7 hate... really? come on man.

I'm not calling you out personally... but just using this moment to share this. I got no problem with Jar Jar Binks. Never have. The prequels are amazing. The "plot depth" & story telling is through the roof & far beyond anything we've seen in star wars & rivals any "super plot" created in cinema to this day. I really have to question anyone's understanding who argues with the fact that this plot is amazing. Like maybe they just don't get it or something. I can explain it to y'all if you'd like (again not calling you out personally)

Outside of that, every prequel movie is done well with top notch cinematography, effects & sound & they all deliver a legit Star Wars experience. FTW that's how I see it... & being exposed to this hanus hater underworld has not changed that one bit.

Im not talking about a scene..... Im talking about fucking Jar Jar

Did someone say Thanos will be unforgetable

<{anton}>

I loved the OG films. I even found stuff to love about the Prequels. But Force Awakens was deeply flawed, and The Last Jedi was so bad it pretty much killed any enthusiasm I had to watch SW movies. TLJ is the only Star Wars movie I've seen where I have no desire to re-watch it. One and done, and I never thought I'd say that about a SW movie.

No inferiority complex from this Marvel Fan Boy. Especially since Infinity War beat Force Awakens' box office record:D

Yeah man, i wholeheartedly agree on the replay value. Typically id not only watch the movies but make sure i watch certain scenes. I was on a binge years back on watching the light saber battles. Shit, i loved specific scenes and moments.

There are literally NONE of that fucking shit in last jedi. I even liked the force awakens part when rey calls the saber. I got goosebumps in that and i remember the theater crowd erupted. My theater crowd was stone cold silent in last jedi throughout and rightly so..

Interestingly there are vids of people going ape shit during last jedi showings and i kept wondering if this was a short bus vacation trip.

Went in with zero expectations and left satisfied. Not Rogue One good but still pretty good.

Or I'm secretely a high level TV/movie executive.

Thanx for sharing your history.

You sound like a legit OG... so the pay off of holding on to your pretense is not worth the resistance when the story is only 2/3rds told. Lets give it a chance. If they f*ck it up in ep 9 then me & you will riot... but for now lets chill & wait until we see the whole story.

In the end Luke rocked up & saved the day & did some really cool stuff. He went human emotions for a year or so... in order to display that the Jedi religion was flawed & it served its purpose. The lesson was that you don't need the Jedi religion to feel the force. (as he told Rey on the cliff.) Lets see how that playz out.
