Yesterday Tony Ferguson tried to discredit Khabib's title by mocking his win over "non-full time fighter real estate agent" Al Iaquinta:

Having a day job doesn't make Iaquinta any less solid though - he is 14-0 in ammy MMA, 13-4 in pro MMA, beat #6 ranked LW Kevin Lee, TUF tourney winner Diego Sanchez as well as veterans Masvidal and Lauzon. He is a TOUGH fighter no doubt.

Many other solid MMA fighters also have / had day jobs outside of MMA careers. Here are some of them:
  • Stipe Miocic (UFC champ) - firefighter
  • Demetrious Johnson (UFC champ) - forklift operator
  • Rich Franklin (UFC champ) - math teacher
  • Fedor (PRIDE champ) - deputy (politician)
  • Mirko Cro Cop (PRIDE champ) - Anti-Terrorist Unit officer
  • Shane Carwin - mechanical engineer
  • Tim Kennedy - National Guard
  • Mike Russow - police officer
  • Chris Lytle - firefighter
  • Ivan Menjivar - security guard
  • Eddie Wineland - firefighter
  • Paulo Thiago - police officer
  • Piotr Hallmann - navy officer
  • Chael Sonnen - real estate agent
  • Brett Rogers - tire technician
  • Joe Lauzon - network administrator
  • Fernando Bruno - cook
That's 3 UFC champs, 2 PRIDE champs and 12 solid fighters with a winning record! It's really dumb to discredit a fighter who has a day job IMHO.

Do you know any other solid "part-time" fighters?

Jon Jones. Part time fighter - full time sh!t disturber..

Cro Cop has always been some kind of swat team cop right?

Are we counting all the commentators/ Fox guys?

Cain
JDS
Gus
GDR
Cat (in prime)
Conor

...oh wait people with another job not people who never fight. Well GDR is a police officer lol

GSP was a garbageman, I don't think he is anymore though

I don’t think we should. It’s not outside of the MMA world, isn’t daily and the fighters that do it are the ones that don’t necessarily need to for the money.

Shane Carwin was a full time mechanical engineer

Edit - saw that you listed this already.

And national guard is full time? My guys dad is a Lt. Colonel in the Illinois national guard. He's a full time teacher and coach.

Cro cop, Stipe and Carwin are the best examples, more possible in the HW division.

You're right about Cro Cop - he was in an Anti-Terrorist Unit. I added him to the list.

I'm not counting commentators.

St-Pierre worked as a bouncer at a Montreal night club in the South Shore called Fuzzy Brossard and as a garbageman for six months to pay for his school fees. But that was before turning pro as a mixed martial artist.
