Why is Nick taking jabs at Nate? Any backstory?

Last time Nick took jabs at him it was over who Nate was surrounding himself with, which could be a tad hypocritical if any of the rumors about Nick's substance use are true, but it could also be that Nick is always going to look out for Nate even when he himself is not in the best frame of mind.
