So, what's better, leave being in prime like Khabib or retire on the shield like Tony?

I have more respect for those that leave it all in the cage/ring.

You can tell a lot about a fighters greatness in how they're able to stay competitive in to their late 30s and early 40s.. the fact that Anderson Silva went the distance with Izzy and DC in his 40's is impressive as hell and cements him as GOAT IMO.

What? You want fighters to fight until they stop winning?

Is retirement not a thing to you or do you think fighters should fight well into their 40s?

Also nobody cares how good Anderson fought vs Izzy. That has no relation to his greatness at all.

Wouldn't know mate cause Khabib ran after only defending his belt 3x instead of having 16 title fights in a row.

People don't call Khabib the goat because of how many title defenses he has. They call him the goat because he rarely if ever lost a round during his career. It is the way he dominated everyone.

The way you win is as important as how many fights you win.

Dumbest thread, Khabib is content at home and is forever going to be known as the guy that went 29-0 and never bled in the octogon retired and then cornered Islam to a title win while Tony sadly is suffering from a case of wanting to get be where Khabib got to. He even mentioned hunting down bears to be like Khabib. It's only the haters that wanted to see him lose and are salty they can't meme here that seem to be overly upset that Khabib retired before that may have happened. Khabib is a legend in the muslim world and Tony sadly has turned into a meme.

For fans: sticking around

Fighter: Khabib if you don’t need the money

Justin Gaethje 1 fight win streak (soon to get another go with 2 wins)
Michael Chandler 1 fight win streak
Conor Mcgregor 1 fight win streak
Charles Oliviera 1 fight win streak
Eddie Alvarez 2 fight win streak

I said "first time" title contention for a reason. It's always easier to fight for a title once you've already been in contention, especially if you're a former champion.

I also knew people defending how shallow other divisions were would cherry pick the exceptions, so I made sure to specify that the differences between the "average win streak" needed for first time contention in these divisions would be significant despite any cherry picking.

And even aside from all of that, the GSP WW and Jones LHW eras never saw so many contenders needing 8 - 10 UFC win streaks just to earn title shots (or sometimes still not earn them, like poor Dariush), like what's happened in LW because of its ludicrous depth.

It's difficult for the rest of us to imagine our career being over before we're 40. Not all these fighters plan well for the future, and some are not even able. The number of them that have well paying options post fight career is relatively small. They should plan better, but not all of us do. And a short career makes this even more difficult for many.

If...

Weidman retired immediately after beating Belfort.

Tyron retired immediately after beating Till.

Max retired immeditely after beating Ortega.

...they'd all be in GOAT conversations.

Well Jon Jones was the same for his first 14 UFC fights until Gus, which is both more fights and defences than Khabib ever had. Then Gus finally challenged him for his record breaking 6th LHW title defence.

It's almost like sticking around on top longer gets harder or something.

Jon Jones himself literally only got his first title shot on his 8th UFC fight. As a replacement fighter for Rashad. What the fuck are you talking about?

The people who don't get title shots while on long winning streaks are because their streaks are trash nobodies instead of filled with actual top contender wins that bring them closer to the title. The inverse is also true of guys who get title shots quickly after beating some top 5 guy(s). This has always been the case.

It's almost like quality of wins matters more than quantities or something.

But he gave it all and didnt leave any questions opened

there will always be people that say....'fighter x retired but what about the fight against fighter y' etc etc etc. there is always a match up and always the next guy. doesnt matter if you win or lose, there is the next. so for khabib to give zero fucks and retire without so much as a scratch of damage taken in his carreer......i would say that is 100000 times smarter than tony answering the question that he is now a punching bag.

I love how you weaseled and said "8th UFC fight" as a response to a paragraph about long win streaks needed to get a title shot.

Gee, I wonder why you couldn't say "7 fight win streak before fighting Shogun" in defense of Jones. What could have possibly happened?!?!

Oh, yeah, he cheated and was punished with a loss on his record, so he had a 3 fight win streak leading up to his shot.

And then once he won, LHW was such a shallow kiddie pool compared to post-2013 LW that he could rack up title wins against fighters who were never champs coming off the smallest of win streaks like Ovince (1 fight win streak), Chael (just lost his last fight), Anthony Smith (3 fight win streak), Thiago (3 fight win streak at LHW), etc.

The people who don't get title shots while on long winning streaks are because their streaks are trash nobodies

Utter horseshit.

There is no other division where multiple contenders have had to go on such insane win streaks over such a small time period just to get title shots, or even just to break into the top 10.

And that's because there are usually 70 - 80 fighters trying to break into the LW top 10 at any one time.

Meanwhile, in the LHW of Jones's era, there were what? 20 fighters outside the Top 10 trying to break in? 30?

And then, in a supreme display of really dumb thinking, you'll whine about how the LW win streaks include more wins outside the Top 10, because you apparently can't understand the vast difference between 20/30 fighters and 70/80 fighters. The LHW equivalent of a Drew Dober would have already had a title shot, and someone like Tsarukyan would have probably had two. Lol

Get the fuck out of here with your 30 IQ analysis.

Tony should've retired after the brain mashing he got from Justin.

What's happening to Tony is terrible. Also it becomes more laughable by the fight that people really thought he was dangerous vs. Khabib off his back when literally every fight he gets manhandled in grappling.

MAybe. It would have been a more revered run.

Tyron especially had an epic run until he didn’t

yeah but we still haven’t seen khabib fight anybody with an active guard ....ever.....in history ....of life

The ONLY thing bettter about fighting long after your prime and absorbing a lot more punishment and KOs is getting a few more paychecks. And you might end up better financially (and certainly have better health/life) if you retire relatively healthy and able to use your mind after retiring. In addition, it hurts your legacy, especially on Sherdog. Imagine if BJ Penn retired shortly after losing his belt. or if Ken Shamrock left the sport at his peak around 1997 and never returned after pro wrestling.
