As much as the UFC has done to bring the sport to where its at in such a short period of time, its amazing that they now are doing anything they can to shatter any credibility the sport currently has.

What am I talking about? No not a womens fight headlining a PPV, its a risk but with the right fights built behind it I think it will be successful.

No, I am talking about ruining the credibility of what a CHAMPION is. A champion is the best of the best. A champion has put in their dues, put together a solid resume, and fought their way to the top. There are no arguments on said champions because they have earned and fought their way to that title.

Unless of course you fight in the UFC. In the UFC the above does not matter. What matters is your mouth. Not your skill...well unless trash talking is a skill. Winning a fight is not even a requirement, hell go on a losing streak, run your mouth and you will get a title shot over anyone else.

I thought Sonnen getting the most laughable title shot of all-time was bad but nope Uncle Dana had to top himself as usual and now we will get an even more laughable GSP and Diaz fight. Lets reward the guy who not only lost his LAST fight but also who has been suspended for the past year. Lets make the guy who just won an OFFICIAL #1 contender fight by knocking out yet another top 10 WW and has a fucking 5 fight win streak over top talent fight again before he gets the shot.

I know its all about money but where does it end? GSP sells fights regardless, why further run the integrity of the sport for a few extra bucks?

MAKE PEOPLE EARN THEIR FUCKING TITLE SHOTS!!!!

agreed.

you're actually complaining that a sport you only heard about because of a reality show is entertainment centric.

these 2 bouts are nothing but the most recent in a long list of similar situations. wake up.

Actually I feel like UFC had its brush with the mainstream for a few years, got really close, even became a bit of a household name, but is falling away from it now and is in a steady decline in terms of popularity. In North America anyways, I dont know about the rest of the world.

it's already mainstream...and has been for a while.

This.

Also your argument that Diaz doesn't deserve the title shot because he lost his last fight is flawed because he did not lose the fight convincingly. A lot of people, this poster included, felt he actually won that fight.

Ye doth whineth too much in thine post.

I generally agree with this.
It' on Fox now and the vast majority of people have been exposed to it. Lots of people just don't find it interesting, and Dana White is wrong when he says his whole line on fighting being a natural draw for people.

Shit likes this gives a bigger audience, you really think people won't buy the ppv because diaz doesn't deserve a title shot?!

They will buy all the Diaz shit talk and will be disappointed they bought the PPV when GSP wins a lopsided decision.

Since when do you need to deserve a shot to get it? All about the $$$$ bro. If Hendricks is as good as he thinks he'll get one eventually.

Agreed, i just made a thread about the same thing.

Recent title fights coming off of a loss

Frankie Edgar vs Jose Aldo
Chael Sonnen vs Jon Jones

And one that is definitely possible, GSP vs Diaz.

All of these fights are very interesting to me, but it holds no credibility to the title.

If it is mainstream it surely isn't heading there now.

If Fox doesn't get amazing ratings with this card, promoted during football season they should be seriously worried.

How is GSP fighting Diaz worse than Jones fighting Sonnen.

Remind me TS, what are Sonnen's recent LHW credentials compared to Diaz' recent WW credentials?

I'm not saying that Diaz should be fighting GSP but with an argument like you used even a valid point gets thrown away.

I'd also like to see Ronda win a fight in the UFC to get her title not be handed one in a new division but oh well, she will win her fight regardless

It IS mainstream. Regardless, it is ridiculous to have a guy coming off of a loss get a shot. Especially when Hendricks just starched Kampmann.

Her fight is going to be like a formality?

Why not just do away with belts and champions? As for the people saying a close decision loss that some disagree with makes the shot valid, what if an NFL team loses a close game in overtime in the playoffs, should they still go to the Super Bowl?
