So, ATOS goes only "ATOS Gi" now?

This

is all that goes through my head any time I hear a gym adopt this policy.

I can see requiring ONE "approved" gi, but only those?

ha! at least its not just us (GB) anymore! I came to GB post uniform policy -- i gather it will be a much harder sell to exisiting people?

It's an interesting debate/policy (regardless if your Atos, GB, or whatever) I'd like to hear others' opinions on.

People that support this uniformity (like say in school/education systems) say it brings a more focused learning environment. Kids can focus more on learning and less about what they should wear (BJJ gis/clothing has become abit of a fashion industry for men).

In terms of a business-sense it may bring about a more professional atmosphere and can help strengthen the brand and create brand awareness. I just think that sometimes it might be too much for older customers and may alienate them.

Personally from my old gym, I supported them when they made shirts and bought them. I've heard from marketing-gurus that you create value in your brand when you charge for it compared to making it mandatory or giving it away for free. Thoughts/opinions?

I understand that it's a hard-saturated market, and most gyms are trying to establish a successful brand-image of themselves. Personally, I've never been a fan of being forced to buy patches and putting them on your gi. I dislike having gym gi patches required for competition. I dislike being forced to buy the gym-specific gi.

Like Atos for example, I've heard the Storm-GI has a weird cut. What if you found a company that makes a better gi to fit you? Shouldn't you have the freedom to support the other company trying to make money while offering a good product as well?

What about the students who are already struggling to afford BJJ at Atos, and now can't shell out a few hundred bucks for a new gi and rash guard?

Just two gis and two rash guards, which is about the minimum most people will need, is going to cost you roughly $500.

I'd be pissed.

I don't believe it until I see it. I train at Atos quite a bit.

but i'll find out this weekend when I head to SD

Our culture is designed to turn everything into a commodity. I can almost hear Andre's business manager saying, "We need to get our average client value up, bro. Think about your family."

As a current unemployed person and overall slightly poor in disposable income i can honestly say my bjj suffers cause i cant afford a new gi + rashie combo. I only have 1 which combined with batshit laundry schedule i try to keep (weird hours etc) means i dont train as much as id like. I just hope to god my current gi - which is almost transparent in some sports - doesn't tear cause if it does ill be cooked until things pick up job wise. IN SAYING THAT -- i do support the policy. Our GB gyms look professional as all hell and so do all the others i visit.

This is news to me! I don't train there all that much anymore, and I'm moving next month, but now I can really only train there once a week in gi. One of my gis, that I got through the school when I signed up, is a Storm, and honestly, I don't like the way it fits. The pants stretch comically when used, and it goes from a decent fit to borderline parachute pants. Ridiculous considering I'm 6'1" and it's an A2.

Never liked uniform policies.

I just want to pick your brain first.
Are you ok with the policy?
I understand if they want to enforce this new uniform policy to new students, but they can't enforce this uniform policy to those students that already have 1 or 2 year contract.

Sponsorship changes all the time. For example, Mendes Bros is no longer receive sponsorship from Storm, instead they receive sponsorship from Shoyoroll now. Good thing AOJ did not require their students to wear Storm gi. I think Andre Galvao knows about this.

What happens to guys like Keenan or JT that are sponsored by other gi companies?

Uniform policies are retarded.

I'm all for there being a "gym-gi" or whatever with patches and junk that people can buy if they wish. If people wanna support the gym or if they feel patriotic then go ahead and get that. That's cool.

But a policy for what gi you can or can't wear? Silly.

These stupid policies and other tma'ish crap is one big reason i left my bjj club that ive been a part of for over 10years.

Bjj used to be that outsider martial art where your instructor was kind of cool and not the greedy cult leader type like most martial arts.

That being said i do feel that guys like the mendes bros and galvao deserve to fatten their pockets being multiple world champs.

At least the UFC gym now switched to OTM to supply their gi's instead of Addidas' crappy judo gi.

Uh oh, let's all get furious and boycott them now, or something.

Don't care much, I get the reasoning, financial and non-financial, and I don't hold that against them.

patches on the gi you compete in,anything you want when you train...thats how every gym ive trained at has been, and the way i like it...personally i only wear white gis with pretty few patches but ive seen all kinds of colors-even had a girl come to judo in a black sleeveless gi with a dragon on it. i was gonna make fun of her,but she outranked me lol :(

All things about it being wrong to force a certain gi on your students aside, that would suck for me if I was out there. Storm doesn't make any gi's big enough for me.
