Of course you can screw up! If you favor "gameplay perks" (lockpick, speech, pickpocket) early, you'll get maimed in battle! You have to favor damage first, that's the best way to stay alive: kill the enemy before he kills you. Having 1000 HP is useless if you can't hurt your opponent.

@TrippleOG decides to go sword and shield, I would advise him to favor one-handed and block for the first few levels. He should also put 1-2 perks in archery. There are lots of archer enemies on top of structures or in protected spots, you need to take them down fast. Then, I'd advice him to pick the armor he will wear: heavy or light. Put points there too, it's a must. He must keep favoring these 3 perks: that means put a point as soon as it becomes available.
The rest is pretty much as you said: hard to screw up. As long as you get a good start, the rest follows. But as I said, don't go picking gameplay perks too early unless you really know what you're doing...
