I don't understand why it was a "disappointment". I enjoyed the fight, and thought it played out almost exactly as I had imagined it would.

Anyway,...

The 2015 boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, billed as the Fight of the Century, was widely seen as a disappointment. Now, a year after a hail of class action lawsuits followed the match, Showtime Networks Inc. (SNI) is suing Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank Inc. (TRI) for an alleged failure to live up to an indemnification agreement.

In New York federal court, Showtime filed the complaint on Wednesday. The lawsuit recounts that after the 12-round fight resulted in a unanimous decision in favor of Mayweather, Pacquiao admitted fighting with an injury. Because of this, Showtime (which along with HBO broadcast the fight) was named as a co-defendant in some of the lawsuits that followed

That would set a horrible precedent for fighters in general. People fight hurt all the time. If you can be sued for it afterwards that would be pretty fucking tragic. We'd end up like the UFC with half our matches cancelled right before they happen.

Fighters aren't really supposed to fight hurt though. It means he lied in his prefight exam. That's a safety issue.

They're basically suing so that their legal expenses involved in defending against those ridiculous lawsuits from idiots get paid by TR because of a pre-existing contract they had before the fight. It's nothing more than that, really. At least, that's what I got from the article.

I hope that CBS/Showtime prevails in court and takes every dime that Bob Arum ever earned and leaves the bastard destitute.

Without having seen the contract I think Jay is right. Looks like they had a pre existing agreement which said that Top Rank would be solely responsible for any damages caused as a result of Top Ranks, or Top Rank fighters, actions. Whether or not Manny/Bob did anything wrong is irrelevant. TR said it was all on them, so CBS is just having them make good on it.

So basically if manny hadn't said he was injured, or uncle bob gets manny to say he was making an excuse that didn't happen TR would owe nothing?

The phantom shoulder injury is costing a lot of money... This is a lesson, after a fight don't make dumb excuses it might come back to haunt you.

Bingo! And if Showtime wins, where do you think TR will be getting the money from? Manny... If it's not in the contract, for sure. If not, TR is then gonna sue Manny Pacquiao for damages regarding the lawsuit. This could get ugly...

One of the dumbest excuses on the biggest night of either of there careers.

Day before fight pac says Jesus will deliver him to me. After fight my shoulder. Smh

So glad the better man won that night

I wonder who else can show up in a thread like this?...........

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think it matters whether or not Manny backtracks and says it's an excuse. If he never says anything, then the fans never sue. No harm no foul. But once fans start suing because he gives then any (albeit ridiculous) reason to, then it's Top Rank's responsibility to take care of it. But apparently Top Rank is also challenging whether or not this is on them. *shrugs* who knows.

I liked this 6 times and unliked it 5. Because 1 like wouldn't be enough.

It's not only a safety issue it's a sportsmanship issue. Although there probably aren't many people who would risk that kind of payday by delaying the fight.

Why are you guys so sure he's making it up after the fight? Didn't he request an injection that was denied? What would the effect of an injection into healthy tissue be?

not even sure he's making it up. It wasn't necessary to say and it made him seem like less of a warrior. To put that into people's minds was a mistake for his image. His fans were and always will be fans but saying he was injured before the fight gained him absolutely nothing and it helps no fighter that has ever tried it whether true or not. What's done is done.

I'm not sure either but it seems likely. He was a warrior for trying to fight through it, but especially for a $100 PPV, we deserved better.

For the point about an injection into healthy tissue ask nfl players about painkilling injections. Or think about the last time you had a shot at the doctors.

For the point @Shoemaker made I was asking a question as I'm certainly no expert in US law. I paid for the fight over here and didn't feel the need to sue anyone about it, shoulder injury or not. We hear fighters talk about not being 100% going into fights a lot, how much does the fact he was asked immediately after 12 rounds of boxing affect how much bullshit you are willing to say and is it legally admissible?
