Should The Lopez Fight Have Been Stopped?

I was rooting for Jean and he's probably so crazy the guy would've found a way back.

But it's fair, he already had his 2nd chance after getting mounted. It wasn't the worst stoppage.

Part of me wishes they had a 5 round Bigfoot Hunt type fight though.

Maybe the spinning elbow that "grazed the top of the head" doesn't put him down if he didn't take that beating in the 1st. The ref had seen enough of him getting smashed.

This idea that the referees and judges have to keep a spreadsheet that maps out every single fighter and how they fight or how tough they are is ridiculous.
Who is talking about spreadsheets? If you have watched enough fights and are familiar with some fighters ability to take punishment, then you know. There are refs that know the fighters, so they ref accordingly.

like... the ref REALLY gave him alot of leeway when he was mounted and getting gnp'd.

When he got dropped by the elbow later, he took 16 unanswered punches.

It was over man.

Jean couldnt recover.

I can admit my boy lost that fight.

I love both fighters so I had no dog in this race, I think there was still more fight to be fought.

Silva was getting clocked worse from mount, and got out of it. There were also 10 seconds left in that round. Any outcome in this fight wouldn’t have surprised me

There were at least 4 or 5 of those that were directly aimed at the back of the head though

Sure, but the truth is that he couldnt recover from that elbow. He couldnt stop the onslaught.

I’m with you, that was a vicious instinctive elbow. The point I’m trying to make is that Silva had the clarity in his mind to attempt an intelligent defense, he tucked his head in and away from the punches and placed his free hand on the top of his own head where the punches were landing.

Wrestlers do this all the time on failed shots, they camp out on bottom sprawl and the refs make sure they don’t get touched lol.

Idk man maybe I’m being selfish but I don’t think Silva was done.

Shots to the back of the head aren't illegal unless the ref thinks the fighter is intentionally targeting it. It's up to the ref's discretion.
They're always fouls. Refs just kind of ignore them. Intent only comes into play with NC and DQ.

He got alot of leeway when he got mounted. At some point enough is enough

I get punches during a transition, but Silva tucked his head in and placed a hand over the back of his head and Lopes landed multiple strikes to the same target in the same position
I had to go check the unified rules to make sure, but yes, it says the ref gets to assess whether its a foul or not. It's basically what the ref thinks the fighter is doing and if they're targeting it.

Does anyone know if the ref declares a TKO during the seconds after he did not hear the buzzer, what is the final ruling?
