Under most circumstances, I would say the stoppage was correct.
However, you always have to look at the fighter specifically, when he is taking a beating.
Silva is an animal. He survived the beating in the first round, which was way worse, because of the elbows to the head.
He came back out very strong. Then he gets caught by a spinning elbow that grazed the top of the head and that puts him down.
Lopez jumps on him with a flurry of hammer strikes and just as Silva is starting to make a move to the side, with a possible recoup and escape, the fight is stopped.
He was not out and has the capacity to take punishment. I would have let it go longer.
Not saying that the stoppage was premature but I am looking at the individual fighter that is capable of continuing.
I understand why he was upset.

the back shots was almost like Oliveira x Chandler 2

but bizarre how Prates and Jean (the nerds) lost because they didn't obey the game plan

while the corner was saying to Prates to hurry and go for it, he was too patient

and the corner said to Jean to be calm, that he doesn't even needed to win the second round, and he was rushing like a bar fight when got caught

In my heart, I wanted it to go a bit longer...the fact that Jean survived that mount in the 1st was enough to instil confidence that just maybe he could get out of trouble again...but I'm fine with the stoppage.

At best, one could argue that it was a 'good early stoppage' and even that is probably pushing it a bit too far. It is pretty hard to call it 'bad'. The optics of him holding the fence certainly did not help his case.

With a bit more discipline and I think he could have cracked Lopes' impressive chin, IMHO.

Maybe the spinning elbow that "grazed the top of the head" doesn't put him down if he didn't take that beating in the 1st. The ref had seen enough of him getting smashed.

This idea that the referees and judges have to keep a spreadsheet that maps out every single fighter and how they fight or how tough they are is ridiculous.

He's super tough.

No doubt about it.

But this wasnt about toughness.

Even if he wasnt gonna get knocked out, he was too stunned to escape that situation, and at some point you have to call it

The problem I have is that a lot of the refs are incompetent. Beltran usually lets fights go longer.
Earlier on, this one ref completely ignored an illegal knee to the head, which definitely influenced the fight.
In Contender, a ref gives a late warning to a guy that eye poked his opponent twice. No point deduction.
These refs are not given strict guidelines, so each is free to make his call. Something should be done about that.

I think everyone can say that there is a lack of consistency.

The ref made the right call here though.

Stoppage was okay at best, but the shots to the back of the head aren't getting ignored anywhere else.

It was just bad reffing. There were shots to the back of the head and the stoppage itself was a tad early.

You gotta let high level fights play out.

If we are Judging off the normal mma fight then yes it was legit stoppage. Silva was hurt. And he was getting pounded in the ground. I wanted silver win just to get a new contender but he got wild and paid the price. Lopes isn’t the guy to get wild with.
