Short guys vs tall guys (striking)

The Clinch is your best friend and also a good ole GnP has no discrimination against taller people.

Throw the jab and wait until I see the right punch. Rush in for the clinch and his reach isn't as effective. From there I should be able to break and land a big one. I did this against a boxer who was 6'3 and probably 30 pounds heavier. Chipped his tooth then he called it quits. I like the climch though so I don't know what if that qualifies as striknig technique

carefull of the UC! I get shorter guys all the time by feinting my right and throwing a short lead UC! (then the right hand:icon_twis). I.E: feint right, soon as opponent steps in I take a quick hop back and throw a short lead UC, pops their chin straight up in the air for the right to follow!

Very good tips, footwork seems to be a good equalizer

I need to work on it as I'm 5'10 -200lbs so I'm sure I'll be looking at guys 6'2 and up all day...

Just take and block the punches while trying to get in close with an angle while ducking and slipping then unload ur punches in his face, simple, effectiv but a little painfull!

I've been watching Zambidis's fightography and that guy is amazing. He relies on quickness. He is pure speed and power. What's weird is that he loves fighting on the inside which makes sense if you think about it because he can generate more power due to his shorter limbs. He is smaller than KID, a previous poster was correct in this observation even though Zambo is listed as 5' 5.5"

I think if you're small you have to be as fast as humanly possible and use evasive tactics to avoid getting KO'd.

Your footwork has to be impeccable to get inside and retreat quickly.

I think Rodney King's tips on the runner style fit a smaller fighter perfectly.

Couple of observations from a 6'5''er:

I wouldn't agree with the get inside and retreat quickly tactic.

If you're standing right in front of me at any distance you're in my world so don't stay there. What I see a lot of guys doing even after taking it to the next level by heeding what others have said above is after they use their angles to get inside my reach, they throw a few strikes and pop back out into my range again! I think pad work tends to instill this habit.

If you've got an angle, keep circling to that side and make them chase you. If you're inside and got them on the defensive don't let up. Work on really long combos and fight more aggressively than you probably normally would.

The guys that really give me trouble are the ones that don't play the striking game in the traditional sense.. they stay way out of range or on me like glue and spend as little time in between as possible.

Oh and if you train at my gym, ignore everything I just said.

I mostly train MMA now and a righty.

Lots of good stuff said--angles, body punches to the gloves, arms, and elbows, changing levels, etc.

Close the distance.
Use your speed.

Fire off an over hand right every so often and lean to your left to avoid a counter. I've found that you get tall guys focused low and a blast from nowhere using the overhand right completely surprises them.

GSP also uses a really cool combo for short guys. It's a simple jab (and/or fake switch left low kick and then the jab) and then a kick to the legs while leaning to the left and staying low. Check out the first video: Leg Kick vs Leg Kick - GSP vs Alves - MMA forum
He used this combo against Alves 3 times that I can remember and landed it hard every time. Think short guy--chopping down the tree. :)

I also use a bunch of judo and wrestling throws once I get inside. We're lower to the ground, so double leg take downs and driving them up and then into the mat has worked like a charm.

Im about 5'2 on a good day and 138 pounds. Due to my height i only spar taller guys so i like to move Alot. circle and circle and when the opportunity comes i comes in with combos and then some dirty boxing. If they separate i stay wayy out of range until i feel the need to close the gap again

Strangely, I was sparring at the gym yesterday and I woke up today thinking "I'm gonna ask for good ideas vs. A taller opponent", and sure enough, a thread existed already.

Igor Vovchanchyn at 5"8 and Mike Zambidis at 5"5 are great strikers.

As a 5"8 fighter I find dirty boxing to be very efficient. Low kicks to the inside and outside works for me too. But this is all if I'm able to close the gap and get inside. And it happens for me only occasionally. I'm seeing a lot of effective strikes from other posters, but few are describing the transition to the inside.

What are some tips to get inside? How would I angle and avoid getting tagged in the face?
