After watching the fight again, it was VERY apparent that Jones was on some sort of juice at UFC 128. Jones manhandled Shogun every second of the fight like it was nothing. A huge red flag considering the caliber of fighter Shogun was.
At the time, Shogun had proven to be one of the greatest LHWs of all time haven beaten some of the best in the division. Had Shogun fought a CLEAN Jones, he would've defended his belt and go on a title defense run.
Don't get me wrong, young Jones was still impressive. However, Shogun was a more complete fighter with more tools to defeat Jones. Jones at the time was still learning to put a lot of his raw skills together. Skill versus skill there is no question prime Shogun would've won. However that night was decided with Jones' strength and ahleticism gained through juicing.
Let's hypothesize had Shogun defended his belt against Jones, he would've fought and defended the same line up of fighters as Jones did in reality. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would've had Shogun putting up a good title defense run.
1) Jones - via TKO or SUB
2) Rampage - would've TKO'd him again
3) Machida - would've KO'd him again
4) Evans - 50/50 fight but I would've put money on Shogun
5) Belfort - another 50/50 fight
6) Sonnen - Shogun would've lost via decision IMO
Shogun could've defended the belt as many as 5 times until an matchup against Sonnen was inevitable.
It's just too bad a Shogun fought a roided Jones who derailed his health and career.
Oh what could've been.
