Here's a quick list of all movies watched by the SMC. Or if you prefer, here's a more detailed examination.
@MusterX steps up to the plate this week with a theme: Films based on a true story. He also wrote up this week's OP so any deviations in the usual format are his.

Here are our candidates!
Star 80 (1983)
Theme: Movies based on a true story.
Director: Bob Fosse
Length: 1h43m
Stars: Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts
Why @MusterX picked it: Star 80 is the true story of 1980 Playmate of the Year Dorothy Stratten and her abusive relationship with her manager/husband played by Eric Roberts. This movie is like watching a train wreck and it will stick with you long after watching it. Watching Eric Roberts descend into madness is hard to watch and it may be the high water mark of his career.
Trailer:
Schindler's List (1993)
Theme: Movies based on a true story.
Director: Steven Spielberg
Length: 3h15m
Stars: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley
Why @MusterX picked it: This film has tough subject matter but I honestly feel it is Steven Spielberg at the peak of his skill set. I'm sure most of you have seen it but its hard to deny Spielberg's mastery. I honestly think Schindler's List is of historical value. The Library of Congress agrees and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2004. Spielberg shot the film in 72 days and filmed in black and white because he wanted to give the film a sense of timelessness. The American Film Institute places Schindler's List as the 8th greatest movie ever made.
Trailer:
In the Name of the Father (1993)
Theme: Movies based on a true story.
Director: Jim Sheridan
Length: 2h13m
Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Pete Postlethwaite, and Emma Thompson
Why @MusterX picked it: This is a film about the false confession of an I.R.A. bombing by Gerry Conlon, played by Daniel Day-Lewis. The film is based on the true life of Gerry Conlon and the Guildford Four. The confession results in Gerry and his lawyer father's imprisonment to a life term and their subsequent struggle to free themselves. Way back in 1993 Daniel Day-Lewis was showing why he is considered one of the greatest actors of all time as he pretty much carries this film as Gerry Conlon.
Trailer:
Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Theme: Movies based on a true story.
Director: Sydney Lumet
Length: 2h5m
Stars: Al Pacino, John Cazale, and Penelope Allen
Why @MusterX picked it: Dog Day Afternoon is a film based on a Life magazine article called The Boys in the Bank about a August 22, 1972 bank robbery by John Wojtowicz and Salvatore Naturale. Al Pacino plays the lead, Sonny, and John Cazale plays his partner in crime, Sal. Was John Cazale ever in any film that wasn't great? The film is very anti-establishment and was recognized in 2009 by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant", and as such was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
