The discussion thread for this movie will go up on Wednesday the 22nd!

This week we jump from the center of the mainstream to the world of indie film with @TheRuthlessOne's Week 8 picks. From the world of sports to the world of the mind, or at least that's an apt description in the case of a couple of these films.

I know what film I want to win but we'll just have to see what the people choose.

Here are our candidates!

Primer (2004)

Director: Shane Carruth

Stars: Shane Carruth, David Sullivan, Casey Gooden

Premise: Four friends/fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there's something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they've built, wrestle over their new invention.

Why @TheRuthlessOne Picked It: I wanted to pick a movie that i felt would stimuate a lot of conversation.

Trailer:

Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)

Director: Goran Dukic

Stars: Patrick Fugit, Shea Whigham, Tom Waits, Shannyn Sossamon

Premise: A film set in a strange afterlife way station that has been reserved for people who have committed suicide.

Why @TheRuthlessOne Picked It: Been a while since I have since this one myself. I remember it having some awesome music and visuals. Its also just a feel good story. Patrick Fugit kicks ass.

Trailer:

Hesher (2010)

Director: Spencer Susser

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Devin Brochu, Natalie Portman

Premise: A young boy has lost his mother and is losing touch with his father and the world around him. Then he meets Hesher who manages to make his life even more chaotic.

Why @TheRuthlessOne Picked It: This movie is just fucking awesome. Joseph Gordon-Levitt kicks ass.

Trailer:

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Director: Richard Linklater

Stars: Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harrelson

Premise: An undercover cop in a not-too-distant future becomes involved with a dangerous new drug and begins to lose his own identity as a result.

Why @TheRuthlessOne Picked It: shot digitally and then animated using interpolated rotoscope. Great cast. Just fun to look at really.

Trailer:

Sunshine (2009)

Director: Danny Boyle

Stars: Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans

Premise: A team of international astronauts are sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun with a nuclear fission bomb in 2057.

Why @TheRuthlessOne Picked It: Awesome visuals, awesome OST. Cillian Murphy kicks ass.

These are all excellent picks, some I've seen and liked (Primer), some I've wanted to (Scanner Darkly), and others that intrigue me but haven't heard of (everything!!) Probably will be inspired to put Hesher and Wristcutters and Sunshine on my to-see list.

I've seen Sunshine and A Scanner Darkly so I won't vote for them I guess

ASD's a funny film. I was pretty bored during it, and I didn't like any of the characters, but that last 15 minutes or so destroyed me. I was weeping and shit bro

Tough one, will have to come back to watch all the trailers before I vote.

The votes can be seen if you're logged off when viewing

As a bunch of people have complained about the closed vote system as well as the requests to keep their vote private for a few days until the poll closes, I have left polls open to be seen by whomever.

Hmm, an interesting choice. Have people really been complaining that the votes were private?

Never heard of any of those. You guys can pick.

Huge fan of Danny Boyle made my decision easy.

This actually made me pretty happy

I was scared that most people would have seen these by now

This is the first time that I didn't know which film to vote for just by seeing the nominations. Nice going, sir!

Well, consider this an offical application to return to the old system.

I think the membership should vote on whether to return to the old system. But first there should be a vote on whether that vote will be open or closed.

Don't get me wrong, that was not directed at any one or even a few posters, I've received multiple comments and questions about not being able to see the results before voting, as well as people that may not be members of the club and don't want to vote so they don't throw off the poll but want to see what the results are anyways.

As a side note, again we have a very even voting pattern this week so far, just like last week. Before these two weeks (when the results were closed, by the way) one movie was generally a major favorite in the votes. Correlation does not imply causation, though. Just making a note.

I'll vote for Sunshine.

I remember Flemmy, that Bowie-worshipping abomination, talking big about it in The Serious Movie Discussion thread. He seemed to have a major breakdown of it thematic content going. Which means, that if it wins, I can just copy-paste his analysis and pass it of as my own! The perfect plan!

Was last week's vote open, too? I was not aware. I wish you had at least mentioned that.

And where are these "multiple comments" coming from? Are they PMs you got? Because other than a few stray thoughts here and there, I don't remember people making a big deal about it.

Okay guys, in an SMC first, we have a tie! So it's showdown time: Primer vs Sunshine.

Both are interesting, thoughtful films. Primer was made for only $7000 and features a mindfuck of a time travel story. Sunshine has the name value of Danny Boyle behind it and has more of a horror bent to it.

So we gotta pick one. Do you want the trippy indie time travel flick or do you want to actually go off into space with a few known actors and a known director?

Just cast your vote here within the thread. I'll tally them up tonight at 8:00 mountain time and that will be our winner.
