The discussion thread for this movie will go up on Wednesday the 8th!

In a move that probably should surprise no one, @Cint has decided to launch a celebration of all things Nicolas Winding Refn for our vote this week. In his own words:

I decided my selections based on my love for this brilliant relatively young filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. I saw Drive and became smitten with his visual storytelling style. I'm looking forward to his debut in the horror genre, "The Neon Demon." Since we discussed my personal Refn favorite Valhalla Rising already. Here's my five picks for the "Sherdog Movie Club Nicolas Refn Film Festival."

And with that said. . .

Here Are Our Candidates!

Pusher (1996)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Stars: Kim Bodnia, Zlatko Buric, Laura Drasbæk, Mads Mikkelsen

Premise: A drug pusher grows increasingly desperate after a botched deal leaves him with a large debt to a ruthless drug lord.

Why @Cint Picked It: The first of the "Pusher Trilogy" and the best. An amazing accomplishment for then film student to direct his first feature. I'm surprised Hollywood producers were unaware of Refn until over a decade later. Of the unknown European actors only Mads Mikkelsen broke away from the group.

Trailer:

Fear X (2003)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Stars: John Turturro, Deborah Kara Unger

Premise: When his wife is killed in a seemingly random incident Harry (Turturro), prompted by mysterious visions, journeys to discover the true circumstances surrounding her murder.

Why @Cint Picked It: Is one of Refn's first films produced in North America. You can tell the potential of this Director in this one. The pacing might be too slow towards the end but for the most part I loved the mystery. The snow makes any movie beautiful and cold. Deborah Kara Unger and John Turturro are magnificent in their roles.

Trailer:

Bronson (2008)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Stars: Tom Hardy, Kelly Adams, Luing Andrews

Premise: A young man who was sentenced to seven years in prison for robbing a post office ends up spending three decades in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter-ego, Charles Bronson.

Why @Cint Picked It: Wow what can I say about Tom Hardy. This was the first time I've ever heard and seen of this unknown actor from the UK. Not realizing this was Refn's film because it looked too dirty. He's capable of giving the audience another dimension to his cinematography.

Trailer:

Drive (2011)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Stars:
Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston

Premise: A mysterious Hollywood stuntman and mechanic moonlights as a getaway driver and finds himself trouble when he helps out his neighbor.

Why @Cint Picked It: This film ignited my passion for Refn's brutally beautiful process. I just love everything about this film. Even the poster jumped out at you with the neon pink and purple. The chemistry between the Driver and Irene was subtly explosive.

Trailer:

Only God Forgives (2013)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Stars:
Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm

Premise: Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death.

Why @Cint Picked It: To be completely honest I didn't like this film one bit the first time I saw it. I was really frustrated at the disjointed story and the long takes. After my second viewing after a recommendation, my OGF experience was much better. I saw the film with a different set of eyes.

UPDATE: We have a winner!

It is with considerable surprise that I announce PUSHER as our winner this week. As I mentioned earlier, I really expected this to be a contest between Drive and Bronson, with Only God Forgives as a possible dark horse. Even though it was my personal choice, I didn't think Pusher had much of a chance, and I thought Fear X--which tied for runner-up--would quite possibly get no votes all. It just goes to show you that with SMC, there are always surprises.

Adjusted for non-member votes, here's the final tally:

Pusher: 8
Fear X: 6
Bronson: 3
Drive: 6
Only God Forgives: 4

So there you have it. This one may be somewhat difficult to locate, so if you're having trouble let us know instead of just sitting out.

See you guys on Wednesday!

Poll is up. It's all Refn, big surprise.

I am breaking my own rule by posting this, and I apologize if this unduly influences any of you voting this week, but if the selection is Only God Forgives, I will have to abstain from participating next week.

You put me in a hard spot, because if it's not Pusher, then I kind of want it to be OGF. . .

That is an awesome poster.

The positive thing about having a Winding Refn themed weekened is that it eliminates all his films from being nominated in the future.;)

Sorry guise, haven't been participating cause I been busy as a bee this spring starting my own organic growing/foraging/jarring operation. There aren't enuff hours in the day and I'm asleep as soon as I sit down at night. Most of the big work is done now so this week I am in! Excited too since ive only seen 2 of the movies in the op. Hopefully one I didn't see gets picked.

I vote Drive. Haven't seen it in a couple years now, down for a viewing this weekend. I'd pick OGF but I don't own that one and haven't seen it at my local video store.

Shit I still need to watch mad max. Overwatch has been taking up all my free time.

Not exactly. Only the winner would be eliminated.

Besides, Refn is the new Kubrick, remember?

I was torn to pick a film. My first choice is Valhalla Rising but oh well. Mads got mad skillz.

Don't you realize we've already watched VR? What exactly do you think is the purpose of movie club?

Fear X is the only one I haven't seen sooo....

Don't worry bro. When you nominate Hearts and Armour -- you know I'll have your back;)
