Here's a quick list of all movies watched by the SMC.
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Nominated By: @Cubo de Sangre
Premise: In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned.
Why I Picked It: It's the GOAT film from the GOAT director.
Trailer:
Battle Royale (2000)
Director: Kinji Fukasaku
Nominated By: @FrontNakedChoke
Premise: In the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill each other under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act.
Trailer:
Versus (2000)
Director: Ryuhei Kitamura
Nominated By: @the muntjac
Premise: There are 666 portals that connect this world to the other side. These are concealed from all human beings. Somewhere in Japan exists the 444th portal.... The forest of resurrection.
Trailer:
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Director: Mel Brooks
Nominated By: @AndersonsFoot
Premise: An American grandson of the infamous scientist, struggling to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body.
Trailer:
Talk Radio (1988)
Director: Oliver Stone
Nominated By: @shadow_priest_x
Premise: A rude, contemptuous talk show host becomes overwhelmed by the hatred that surrounds his program just before it goes national.
Trailer:
eXistenZ (1999)
Director: David Cronenberg
Nominated By: @chickenluver
Premise: A game designer on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged.
Why I picked it: Cronenburg is a well known director, and this film seems to be a hidden gem from him. I've seen it once a few years ago, and it was perhaps my favorite Cronenburg film experience. Also had one of my favorite ending scenes and final shots of any film. I've been meaning to watch it again for some time to see if it holds up.
Trailer:
Fury (2014)
Director: David Ayer
Nominated By: @Scott Parker 27
Premise: A grizzled tank commander makes tough decisions as he and his crew fight their way across Germany in April, 1945.
Why I Picked It: Saw it in theaters when it came out and thought it was a great movie. Anytime it's on one of the movie channels I watch.
Trailer:
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Director: Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski
Nominated By: @Caveat
Premise: An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
Why I Picked It: Caveat didn't say but I'm guessing Shadow paid him to.
Trailer:
24 Hour Party People (2002)
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Nominated By: @sickc0d3r
Premise: In 1976, Tony Wilson sets up Factory Records and brings Manchester's music to the world.
Why I picked it: I've never seen it but the story of Factory Records, inspired by the Sex Pistols to become one of the most important recording companies in history before spectacularly flaming out (much like the Pistols themselves), sounds promising.
Trailer:
Cool Hand Luke (1967)
Director: Stuart Rosenberg
Nominated By: @MusterX
Premise: A laid back Southern man is sentenced to two years in a rural prison, but refuses to conform.
Why I picked it: If I had to choose a movie that is a mandatory watch for any movie buff, but one that, for whatever reason, I encounter people saying they have never got around to watching it, I would choose Cool Hand Luke (1967), starring Paul Newman.
Trailer:
The Burmest Harp (1956)
Director: Kon Ichikawa
Nominated By: @europe1
Premise: In the War's closing days, when a conscience-driven Japanese soldier fails to get his countrymen to surrender to overwhelming forces, he adopts the lifestyle of a Buddhist monk.
Why I picked it: Widely famed as one of the greatest Japanese films of all time, winning the Oscar for best foregin-language film and everything. I haven't seen it, so I'm curious to see if it really holds up to such lofty expectations.
