For you new guys, this is the thread where we talk about everything that's happened over the previous cycle and discuss any ideas we have for the Club.

If you want to rank the movies this cycle or provide any additional commentary, now is the time to do it. If you have any suggestions that might improve the Club experience, here's where to offer those.

List of films we saw in this Cylce:

Detention
Coffy
Choclate (Zen -- The Warrior Within)
Dog Day Afternoon
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
American Movie
Prisoners
Last Exit to Brooklyn
Sideways
Lincoln
Troll Hunter
Kill List
Black Book
The Wave
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Two Issues I have to raise:

1. What do people think of the Battle Royale? Is it interesting? Would you like to see more of it? Should there be any rule changes to how it's done?

2. Since, naturally, people expect there to be some change-ups now that Shadow_Priest_x's reign of terror is over, how about we start randomly excecuting people? One think I considered is that we could do weekly top tens/fives. The user whose week it is could get to pick a topic -- and people would be free to fill out said top 10 if they so wish. So, for example, if Shadow_Priest_x was still with us he would of course inquire to what our favorite Steven Spielberg movies are. The user in question could decide if it should be a top 5 or top 10 dependant on the nature of the topic. Anyone interested in that?

europe1's top 10 Steven Spielberg movies

10. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
9. Catch me if you Can
8. Saving Private Ryan
7. Bridge of Spies
6. Temple of Doom
5. Last Crusade
4. Raiders
3. Jurassic Park
2. Schindler's List
1. Jaws

And yes, I am just suggesting this because I bloody love making lists so much.

Or as we know it around these parts. . . Chocolate.

Haha. I was checking chickenluver's imdb page. It's get confusing when the Swedish release title is in english but not actually the American titel.

At least I didn't mistake Dog Day Afternoon swedish title, which's is literally A Satan's Afternoon.

These are just absolute classics.

Dog Day Afternoon
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

These are excellent.

Prisoners
Last Exit to Brooklyn
The Grand Budapest Hotel

These are a lot of fun.

Detention
American Movie
Zen -- The Warrior Within
Troll Hunter

These were OK.

Sideways
Kill List
Black Book
The Wave

Didn't like these.

Coffy
Lincoln

A new idea I'd like to float is my interest in a double feature week. We can't do that all the time, but it might be fun once in a while. I'd like to put one together and see how it goes. If not, I understand.

My favorite of this cycle is Grand Budapest Hotel by a significant margin (review coming tonight).

I also really liked Coffy, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Sideways.

I like it. The rules seems fine to me. Maybe 3 votes each instead of 2? idk

I was thinking each member could choose to do the battle royale instead of their regular nominations, or we could do a battle royale for the last week of each cycle, that way no one would have to sacrifice their week.
And this would be its own thread? I'd be up for it. Lists are cool.

I like this idea. I've been wanting to nominate Master of the Flying Guillotine, but since it's the sequel to One-Armed Boxer I wouldn't want people to watch the former without having seen the latter.

I guess since things got goofy with Johnson, and then Anderson came back on board, I had two nominations this cycle.

Ignoring my own films, such as the incredibly underrated Detention, I'll just give my Top 5:

American Movie - Shitload of fun, plain and simple. Mark is a fascinating character and I sympathize with him.

Sideways - An interesting look into the weird and wacky sub-culture of wine enthusiasts.

Chocolate - An imperfect narrative journey, but I enjoyed the action and characters and weird quirks like the impromptu autism vs Tourret's dance battle.

Prisoners - Had to watch this one twice for it to grow on me, but it's a well-made film and Loki is a great character who deserves a spin-off movie.

Lincoln - Slowly paced but an interesting look at our 16th President and the lengths he went to to pass the 13th amendment.

1. What do people think of the Battle Royale? Is it interesting? Would you like to see more of it? Should there be any rule changes to how it's done?

I think it's cool to do every once in a while, though it's dumb how the film I nominated, as well as both films I voted for, are getting virtually ignored.

So maybe it's not so cool after all.

What do you mean excactly?

We see two films like in the Grindhouse?

Yeah. Nominations would be four different sets of two films. They could be a part one and two of something or maybe two separate movies trying to cover the same ground (eg. The Abyss and Deep Star Six).

Guy you have The Room as pretty good? What the hell, if any film is worthy of being described as magnificent it's that one.

And this would be its own thread? I'd be up for it. Lists are cool.

I was thinking of doing them in the voting thread.

I was thinking each member could choose to do the battle royale instead of their regular nominations, or we could do a battle royale for the last week of each cycle, that way no one would have to sacrifice their week.

Yeah, I'm not too interested in sacrificing my week. I like the idea of doing it at the end of each cycle.

I think that one of the consequences of doing a special event-week: Battle Royale's, Grindhouse, Contests, etc, is that users will have to decide to use their own turn for it. We can't have a special event week for every theme during the last week of the cycle. If we did that -- we would never cover every particular theme that could get nominated (or it'd just take a hell of a long time to get to them)

How about we do Battle Royale's at the end of the Cycle -- and then users themselves could decide if they wanted to do Contests or Grindhouse weeks during their own week? Alongside whatever other idea comes up.

What do you mean excactly? Four people nominate different movies and we see them duke it out?

I like this idea. I've been wanting to nominate Master of the Flying Guillotine, but since it's the sequel to One-Armed Boxer I wouldn't want people to watch the former without having seen the latter.

It's not like they're closely connected or anything. All you need to know in Master is that this One-Armed Boxer once killed two of his students and now he's out for revenge. Hat-decapitations ensue. Though I guess continuity always help.

Ever seen Jimmy Wang Yu's flick Beach of the War Gods? It's like a Seven Samurai-esque movie about Jimmy stomping Japanese pirates. Half of it is like one big action scene. He even directed it himself. It's totally dope, dude.

This entire paragraph makes me angry that we haven't had a Jimmy Wang Yu week yet.

So we'd be doing this just for fun?

Doesn't that describe this entire cult? We're not excactly earning academic credits here:D

Yeah. Nominations would be four different sets of two films. They could be a part one and two of something or maybe two separate movies trying to cover the same ground (eg. The Abyss and Deep Star Six).

I'm down for that. Huge Grindhouse mark. Might want to avoid 3+ hours flicks though.

As for 1989 underwater movies go.

The Rift > Deep Star Six > Leviathan > The Abyss

All pretty darn good though and close to each other in quality. Haven't seen Lords of the Deep yet though.

Pretty crazy that 5 underwater films came out the excact same year. That's the power of Cameron I tell ya.

Copy-Paste error.

Guy you have The Room as pretty good? What the hell, if any film is worthy of being described as magnificent it's that one.

I don't see The Grand Budapest on your updated list.

Must have missed it somehow. Added it right after Prisoners at number 22.

5. Dog Day Afternoon
4. Prisoners
3. One Flew Over A Cuckoos Nest
2. Sideways
1. The Grand Budapest Hotel

The battle royale concept is fun. And I like lists, let's make some.

My Spielberg's would go like this (there are quite a few I haven't seen):
10. The Terminal
9. Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
8. Minority Report
7. Catch Me If You Can
6. E.T.
5. Close Encounters of The Third Kind
4. Jaws
3. Saving Private Ryan
2. Jurassic Park
1. Raiders Of The Lost Ark

If Executive Producer credits were included, I'd consider fitting Back To The Future, The Money Pit, Men In Black, and probably Gremlins in the top ten somewhere.

I think we could make it standard to do a Battle Royale week at the end of every cycle. It's just one week after all.

What do you mean excactly? Four people nominate different movies and we see them duke it out?

No, I'm saying an entirely separate event that has nothing to do with voting or nominations. Over PMs I recommended a box office prediction contest, but you didn't seem to like that idea.

Whatever we decide on, I'm thinking of something that is objective in nature and that lasts several weeks long. The winner gets . . . something. I dunno.

This idea is brought on by something we used to do on an MMA betting forum I used to be active on. We'd do a betting contest with a $20 entry fee and whoever won it would get all the entry money. Obviously we can't do money here but we can still do a contest of some kind.

We might be miscommunicating. The idea would be for a battle royal at the end of each cycle. So once every dozen or so week. The double feature idea is just something I've wanted to do and it would of course be during my regular turn. I just didn't know how people would react to having to watch two films. And yeah, the run-time would make me not do something like Abyss.

The Rift > Deep Star Six > Leviathan > The Abyss

How you have Abyss behind Leviathan and Deep Star is incomprehensible.
