I know there's a few old school UO players on here.
The few that know what UO was, knew it was way ahead of its time and set the bar for open world MMORPGS. Its kill anyone, craft everything, housing, and loot everything type of gameplay made relationships with people a real thing. Unfortunately, every MMO that came out after that was some carebear sissy shit that separated PvP players from PvE nubs.

Shards Online is in pre-Alpha and is the spiritual successor to Ultima Online in almost every way.
Much more of a sequel to UO than that shitty game Shrouds of the Avatar. While it's still really early in development, its far beyond anything else trying to replicate UO.

Yep the precursor to all the mmorpgs! I hated to mods on there though. I was constantly in jail and was prodded by the mods, now you're going to be a good boy if I let you out of here right??

Cool. I used to play the full-pvp MUDs Duris and Basternae, and UO was a natural continuation of that. When people will take ALL YO SHIT when you die you actually feel the heat! To bad that what followed has all been carebear-shit.

I was addicted to that game back in the day, it was my first MMO experience and it was incredible going in dungeons together and hanging out at the guild house with my highschool classmates.

I love being an animal tamer. I was one of the first people on my server to have the cool nightmare horse.

Animal taming around 2:10 mark

You all should check out darkfall new dawn if you like open world, full loot pvp.

On the 28th their offering 3 weeks free to kick off their development.

They recently bought the licence in march.

I played Dark Fall online when it came out. It was really fun for the time, but the grind was too hardcore.
Very similar to UO in a FPS kinda way.

The memories. Back in early alpha stages, I use to park my bard near the foundation of the building and provoke guards on unexpected players that were in town. They thought that the guards were bugged and attacked them randomly

The grind has been addressed, no more macroing required, or scripts to be competitive.

There's a whole list of changes coming down the pipe and a few already implemented.

Come tuesday you get 3 weeks free so theres no reason not to give it a try and see the changes already in the game. The game itself changed a lot from 2009 to 2012

Race Wars? I haven't seen one of them since high school. I am in. Let me get my Rebel Gray on.

Made it in the most wanted bounty board with a murderous mage.

So is it pay to play after the 3 weeks?
What makes this better than the original? I actually kind of enjoyed training at the guild house. Gives a break from the monster grinding.

i used to play alot of UO loved it and had a great time, but i dont have the time to grind out skills again

I read title as "Sharts"

Shards online? Sounds addictive.

Darktide on Asheron's Call was all PvP, all the time. On the other servers you could choose to "go red" and fight/kill/loot other red players. Were you the kind of player that enjoyed killing casual players who had no idea what they were doing? That always seemed really boring to me, no challenge there.

I loved the PvP environment but it was exhausting. You had to have your guard up, buffs up, weapons up, no matter what you were doing. Going to town to supply was always an adventure.

I actually created N accou t and started a tIme a clue of months ago but had no idea what I was doing. Its been close to 15 years since I've played I think.

The PvP in early UO was so ruthless, but it had that realness to it.

Mark and recall were game savers, when you went to harvest resources in the wild you did it nekked in the 50/50 chance you got PKd for fun, and it was good fun to lay down a wall of fire on a bunch of miners and watch them die.....
