self defense vs combat sport

What followed went way beyond self defense and turned into aggravated assault, unlawful detainment, and sexual battery.

After beating the man unconscious, Ms. Zajac dragged the man to the back room, chained him to a radiator, and spent the next few days raping the guy to "teach him a lesson". When he finally escaped, the robber had to go to the hospital for treatment of severe injuries to his groin/pelvic area.

a little off topic, but could you go into further detail on this sexual battery he got? was it vaginal rape? or the "other" kind???

I think the live between "fighting" and "combat" is getting blurred here in respect to the MMA vs. special operations forces. A fight takes place in a gym or arena. It has set rules and officials to keep things in check. Combat is what happens when two men try to hurt each other anywhere else. In just about any fight give me the mixed martial artist, he'll be better trained with more specific conditioning. In combat it's going to be the man that does what is necessary to ensure the fact he walks out of that situation alive. And no matter who you are or what your training, your odds are never more that 50/50 on your best day.

I train at a Krav-Maga school and from the outside it looks like combat sport school. During the grappling classes we roll, during the kickboxing classes we spar, and during the weapons classes you combine both. He even has athletes that compete in various comps.

The only differences is that we talk about and "practice" defending/using illegal techniques (i.e., kneeing on the ground, the proper way to soccer kick...)

You can't place a number or a percentage on such things. I know a few guys who carry weapons with them with full intent to kill if they have to. Thus they would have a 70/30 chance if we went by that. I do agree with the rest of your post however. Everything is situation specific and thus should be treated accordingly.

Wasn't trying to give exact odds on it, just saying that there is so many variables in a real life situation you can't give an edge to anyone. Dirty fighting and impromptu weapons are great equalizers against someone with training or even armed.
