Lets be honest. The eye poke changed the trajectory of the fight. Paddy lost all momentum and was at a severe disadvantage from that eye poke on. Not to mention Gaethje should have gotten a point deduction. Basically that eye poke had an enormous effect on the outcome of that fight.

I believe it was accidental but it doesnt change the effect that accidental fould had on the fight. And to be fair to the the ref it was a difficult eye poke to catch because Justin was throwing a jab and the ref could have thought it was a knuckle to the eye which is legal

The second eye poke was Justin punching with correct legal technique and Paddy moving his head too slowly and in the wrong direction to dodge. Your thumb is supposed to be at the side of your fist when you punch to avoid broken thumbs; failure to do this is a big part of why fist fights between novices are so often comically bad.

It's still a foul and recovery time should have been allowed, but taking a point or points for it would have been absurd, and saying it's grounds for a rematch is absurd, as it was entirely Paddy's fault. It's the perfect example for why you don't automatically take points for accidental fouls.

No rematch is going to happen lol. Justin Gaethje will fight Topuria and Paddy will fight Drew Dober.

Paddy definitely got poked quite a bit.

There is no debate there.

Eye pokes are ruining the sport.

More and more it seems tactical to make the same error... "By accident"

Ez fix, blindfold both fighters from the start and let the lulz begin.

When young Bobby was in martial arts, many moons ago, literally some day one shit was to never strike with your thumb out, unless you intend to use it. It's how you break your thumb
You break your thumb by laying it across your other fingers and accidentally landing a punch flush on your thumb with no give behind it or, worse, tucking your thumb under your fingers and landing any kind of punch at all. Tight on the side is proper technique with some chance of hyperextension if you land very awkwardly, but you're not going to break your thumb except on a reverse hammerfist or some such.

That isn't how Justin threw that punch at all

I didn't see the momentum you are referring to and Paddy should take some time to learn to wrestle so he can use his ground game. That was awful. Let Arman have his rightful shot

I can't tell if you trolling, never have I ever been taught to have the thumbon the side, it's how you catch it and bend it back causing a severe break. Always tuck the the thumb over your fingers

Definitely don't wanna stick it out like Justin, who appeared to be trying to get a ride out of the cage

Maybe he has a freakishly long thumb and he has to avoid covering his knuckles with it! Also saying not to lay fingers over fingers, that is how a fist is made, curled fingers..

That was a sneaky eye “punch”poke technique
I bet he trains that

I would train and develop a two handed double hammer fist punch poke
Jab the thumbs out at impact to hit both eyes
Instant KO
No Can Defend

What. About patty cake flailing as he blitzed with fingers out? I bet at least 50% of his “significant strikes” were open handed slaps with fingers out. It’s a miracle he didn’t eye poke Gaethjre, gaethje just had defense.

I was there live and it 100% changed that fight. 2nd eye poke as well. UFC refs are utterly useless. all of em
