Sean O’Malley explains why he has avoid fighting ranked competition in the UFC

smart man
the sport rewards Journeymen and money fight losers like Nate and Conor.
all thanks to the pink goof, its no longer a legit sport. its a freak show where its worthless to fight for legacy
I don’t get this. Nate and Conor take fights they can lose.

Conor did it.
Conor at the very least wanted to face tougher competition to get him closer to the belt. In this case it’s clear Sugar Shins (I stole that) is content fighting cans and having his rainbow haired fan base make claims about how great and entertaining he is.

Makes sense. Fighters should get paid more depending on the ranking of their opponent.
Using that logic, O'Malley should get more for fighting a ranked fighter & the ranked fighter should get less for fighting an unranked O'Malley.

In simpler terms, fighter who's paid his dues & earned his ranking should be paid less than a journeyman/up-&-comer.

If that's the case, good luck EVER finding a ranked fighter willing to risk his position within the company vs someone like O'Malley.

If you fight lesser opponents for the same money, this can help a young fighter.

You gain experience in the cage. You can potentially stay healthier in your career if you can avoid a dangerous opponent who will slug it out.

The onus is on the promoter to encourage fighters to agree to fight. The blame is on Dana White and his friends for failing to get Jon Jones, Ngannou, Cejudo, Fedor, etc. on the big stage when fans wanted them.

Cant hate if the guy is trying to make money

This is literally one of the biggest cases of biting the hand that feeds you in MMA history.

Fucking Sage Northcutt and McGregor didn't get the level of protection the UFC is giving him.

I see your point. Just need to tweek the algorithm. You get paid based off of the highest rank of the two. Of course, the higher ranked fighter will still want to fight those that are ranked above him, but that should always be true. A special multiplier can be introduced when both fighters are in the top 10, top 5, or if it’s a championship fight.

It's insane they get paid the same amount regardless of the opponent.

Those contracts are a joke.
they're paid what they're worth, not what their opponents worth...If anything, Sugar is the side B of this match up....If he wins he will definitely earn a bump in pay grade...

<DontBelieve1>

Maybe Frankie since he is kinda on his way out, but he lost me at Petr Yan. But even if he is telling the truth, If he were to beat Petr Yan, he just jumped to #1 contender. Sounds to me like this clown knows he will get exposed again and will go down the Mike Perry road.

You guys are Boomers. Chael said that quote on his youtube account, and O'Malley DEFINITELY watches Chaels youtube.

O'Malley is a VERY good fighter. I can't for you all to find out.
What are you even talking about?

Makes sense. Fighters should get paid more depending on the ranking of their opponent.
You REALLY wants fighters to pick and choose and duck everyone.......

Guys would literally only accept fights with higher ranks. Literally no one with a good business mind would accept lower ranked fighters to make less pay and risk their own ranking.

He’s being smart and all talent should be used that way after losses.

Poor guy. He is running his mouth. He will get the Huerta treatment soon. They will send him packing with two losses in a row.

What, Suga is gonna hurt his leg and fall over again? And die from it?

That wasn't like Dustin vs Conor where Conor was getting the shit beat out of him and was saved by a broken leg. Chito had nothing for Sean. Chito didn't win, Sean lost by self injury.

If you hate Suga, find something else to cling to.

Did u even watch the fight? What kind of troll shit is this

According to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Shelby had offered O’Malley a fight with former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 268.

The proposed contest would make Sean O’Malley’s biggest challenge to date, but ‘Suga’ recently explained that a big name does not result in a big cheque.

“Next fight, a lot of people want me to fight someone ranked,” O’Malley said on the “No Jumper” podcast (h/t MMAJunkie). “They wanted me to fight someone ranked last fight. I was supposed to fight Louis Smolka (at UFC 264). For me, I have a contract to fight a certain amount of fights, and I’m gonna get paid a certain amount of money whether I fight Louis Smolka, the dude I was supposed to fight, or I fight Petr Yan, the No. 1 bantamweight in the UFC. I get paid the same. I’m gonna fight this dude (who is lower). And I’m going to fight this dude on a Conor McGregor pay-per-view.”

Sean O’Malley continued:

“Chael Sonnen always says fight the worst dude on the highest part of the card. A lot of bantamweights, and just people in the UFC, they definitely hate, and it comes from jealousy. I’m getting way more eye balls than them. I perform in there. You can go and watch some of these guys perform, and you literally pick up your phone, start surfing Instagram, you just don’t give a f*ck what they’re doing.”
