Sean O’Malley explains why he has avoid fighting ranked competition in the UFC

Sure, everyone gets the “safest route for the most money path” that’s generally the most successful way to go about things, can’t knock the kid for that. I hate O’Malley but I totally understand the game. It is what it is.

Now let’s see how he really feels about himself when he gets put against real competition and loses again. I hope the can crushing really padded his ego, because this attitude is just going to hurt him in the long run. There is only so much Mountiho’s out there you can sell us before he has to fight someone real.

So he's gone from calling out Font post fight to ducking a shot Frankie Edgar.
And people think he's a legit fighter/contender rather than a sideshow. YIKES

Not a great mentality for long term success I guess

Yeah, this totally doesn't make him sound like a scared little bitch.

According to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Shelby had offered O’Malley a fight with former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 268.

The proposed contest would make Sean O’Malley’s biggest challenge to date, but ‘Suga’ recently explained that a big name does not result in a big cheque.

“Next fight, a lot of people want me to fight someone ranked,” O’Malley said on the “No Jumper” podcast (h/t MMAJunkie). “They wanted me to fight someone ranked last fight. I was supposed to fight Louis Smolka (at UFC 264). For me, I have a contract to fight a certain amount of fights, and I’m gonna get paid a certain amount of money whether I fight Louis Smolka, the dude I was supposed to fight, or I fight Petr Yan, the No. 1 bantamweight in the UFC. I get paid the same. I’m gonna fight this dude (who is lower). And I’m going to fight this dude on a Conor McGregor pay-per-view.”

Sean O’Malley continued:

“Chael Sonnen always says fight the worst dude on the highest part of the card. A lot of bantamweights, and just people in the UFC, they definitely hate, and it comes from jealousy. I’m getting way more eye balls than them. I perform in there. You can go and watch some of these guys perform, and you literally pick up your phone, start surfing Instagram, you just don’t give a f*ck what they’re doing.”

He got a point.
if he gets to fight either for the same pay, why take more risks?
Work through his current contract beating scrubs, then make a better contract that gets him paid more, calculating the rankings as well.

smart man
the sport rewards Journeymen and money fight losers like Nate and Conor.
all thanks to the pink goof, its no longer a legit sport. its a freak show where its worthless to fight for legacy

You guys are Boomers. Chael said that quote on his youtube account, and O'Malley DEFINITELY watches Chaels youtube.

O'Malley is a VERY good fighter. I can't for you all to find out.

Mate, Don't emulate O'malley. I know you are an ammy fighter and I remember going back and forth in another thread where I showed you his record. He just confirmed it with a statement like that above. He needs to be stepping up that competition or he may as well fight in Bellator. He isn't some new prospect.
Fighters like Gane and Izzy have fought for and won the title in 2 years. O'malley is still fighting regional guys 4 years later.

He does have good logic here, and when you're on the hype train, you don't have to fight anyone good and you'll eventually get a title shot and make millions that way.

A less courageous translation to what he said though could be: "I'm not confident that I can beat the best so why take the risk of losing my hype when I can fight bums and have casuals praise me into a better contract".

I’ve disagreed with Sean on a bunch of his antics but he’s right here
It’s cute. But it’s how it’s been this way for forever. He may be in a position to change that at some point but he certainly isn’t now. And he’s just whining about himself. I don’t see him discussing a union or anything of that sort. Don’t hate the player hate the game. I get it. But in this case, he’s terrible at playing the game. This comment is so basic and myopic it’s crazy. Dude. Fight Edgar and beat him. Then you’ll have major negotiating power. Use the ufc to build your brand and earn money the other way. Make them have to pay you more. Successful people find ways to make the system work in their favor if they can’t change it. This kid clearly never had a father worth a damn to teach him about how to handle life. Sixnine is the worst person to take advice from

He fought a ranked fighter before with the same pay, he just didn't win and now refusing to fight ranked fighters. If it's a contract issue re-negotiate your contract, or fight a ranked fighter and win then re-negotiate your contract. Seems like he's happy with the MVP treatment. Not champion mentality at all. His fans should take notes.

Coz he’ll die

see Chito fight

What, Suga is gonna hurt his leg and fall over again? And die from it?

That wasn't like Dustin vs Conor where Conor was getting the shit beat out of him and was saved by a broken leg. Chito had nothing for Sean. Chito didn't win, Sean lost by self injury.

If you hate Suga, find something else to cling to.

O'malley is scared. He knows he is a mediocre fighter and couldn't win a ranked fighter.

I completely agree with what he says. It's smart to just crush cans if you're getting paid the same. He'll probably argue for more pay on the condition that he has to fight higher ranked members in his next contract. It's smart business tbh.

But why would you be so stupid to vocalise it? You're basically killing your own clout/aura. His manager was probably screaming into a pillow as he said this in an interview.

Or maybe he knows his zoomer followers are all about 'hustle life' and getting paper. He could be playing 4D chess who knows?

It's his way of saying "Deep down I know I'm not that good so I'll use a another scam artists' quote to justify not fighting someone who'd help me back up my talk but will expose me again."

The one time he stepped up competition he folded - then acted like a crybaby afterwards.

For whatever reason the ufc was pushing him (is???) and putting him in undeserved spots on cards. That means exposure but also getting exposed as a mediocre talent at best, again, to a large audience is bad for his brand.

Seems like a good plan, especially if you aren't in title contention.
