Dude is insufferable... but a lot of people use shock collars.

I've never used them for behavior (although I know people who have, and I don't judge them), but I did have a couple of dogs that I had a wireless perimeter system for that functioned via shock collar. I do understand that it feels cruel to hurt a dog like that for just being a dog and wanting to chase squirrels and cars and follow scents all over the neighborhood like dogs want to do, which is why I put the frigging thing on my own throat and wandered off to see how it felt before ever putting it on the dogs.

But there are also always tradeoffs. The system meant they could come in and out as they pleased and just roam the yard without being tethered and without me worrying about them getting run over or lost. I felt that was a worthwhile tradeoff, and ultimately I think they had happier lives because of it.

Until they realized that the collars do stop delivering shocks after a minute or so beyond the perimeter (as a failsafe for a dog taken of the perimeter through no fault of its own), and started to grit their teeth and power through so that they could explore the neighborhood at their leisure. As I said, there are always tradeoffs.

I guess I can’t dump on him. In the 90’s we had one our dogs wear a shock collar to keep him from barking his ass off all night. It didn’t work and it didn’t have any noticeable impediment on his barking after the first couple of times he barked with it on. Maybe a weak shock or his fur was too thick, but the juice was still worth the squeeze for him.

They have collars that spray a mist of citronella, too, which dogs apparently hate. These work super well. But the ones we had were on a bit of a hair trigger and the poor dogs were getting sprayed for the slightest little vocalization, which felt unfair to the dogs and also meant constantly refilling the things, so we didn't end up using them long term.

I know that some people will just place blame for being bad dog owners with untrained dogs, and there's some validity in that, I guess... but my dogs were also bell trained for indicating when they wanted out, and crate trained to just go curl up in their crate at the word "bedtime"; some breeds just have their tough behaviours, and when you have two little yappy Havanese dogs from the same litter growing up together, it's a tall order to get them out of that barking cycle when one of them hears something (or thinks she does) and kicks off that spiral into back and forth barking madness.
