I will reserve judgment on the movie until I see it, but there are a couple of things I can say from the trailer alone:
  • If Sydney’s daughter is supposed to be a teenager, McKenna Grace would’ve been a much better fit, but I can understand why they cast her as the friend instead. That kid’s workload is absolutely fucking insane, and there’s no chance she was going to commit as the new lead for this franchise.
  • That being said, Isabel May is not the right fit for the part. I know 24-year-olds play 15-year-olds all the time, but that girl has a grown-ass woman’s face. A hot grown-ass woman’s face, but still. The fact that she’s 5cm taller than Neve Campbell doesn’t help either. They should’ve gone with an actress in her 20s who still had some baby fat in her face and was somewhat shorter.

Isabel May is pretty but how is she pulling off 15? Maybe when she filmed 1883 she could of but now?

I have never seen any of the Scream movies. And I doubt I’ll see this one.
I just never saw the appeal.

And they compound the problem by casting an actual teenager to play someone in her friend group.

If you want to have people in their mid-20s play teenagers, go ahead. If you want to have the teenagers played by actual teenagers, do that. But mixing the two? That’s just a recipe for breaking suspension of disbelief.

I think the last Scream movie I saw was Scream 3 LOL
You're not missing anything. 1-3 are the best and the ones that feel like the real movies in the franchise. 4 is terrible and 5 & 6 are exponentially worse.

That said, so far just based on the trailer, this one looks about a billion times better than 4-6. If it maintains looking decent until release I'll go see it. (It doesn't look great per se, but compared to the absolute bile we got for the last three, it looks like a definite improvement).

My biggest complaint is with Sidney. Why did they make her so plain and borderline ugly looking? Neve in real life is smoking hot (MILF), like when she goes to conventions and stuff. They should have let her natural beauty shine through instead of making her look like this.

@JadeOwl Do we know for sure she's playing 15? Last I heard she was born before the events of Scream 4, and this one takes place a few years after 6. Which would make her older than 15.

We know that every film in the Scream franchise is set roughly in the same year that it is released in. That means that it's a fair guess that Scream 7 will be set in 2026, making it 15 years since the events of Scream 4, which tool place in 2011.

I do not recall it ever being mentioned in Scream 4 that Sydney was already a mother, or already being married. That's why I've been operating under the premise that her daughter Tatum (nice detail the trailer revealed BTW, that she named her daughter that) has to be at most 15. Where did you hear that she'd been born before the events of Scream 4?

However, since I don't remember anyone in Scream 4 saying she had not given birth or been married yet, it would be possible to introduce the retcon without an outright contradiction. It would make it retroactively weird that her child and baby-daddy were not even mentioned or checked up on during the Ghostface rampage, but it wouldn't create a plot hole.

Yeah, definitely a cool element that she named her daughter after her deceased friend. Watching the original Scream recently, I was struck by how awesome of a friend McGowan’s character was to her. Had her back big time.

Only time I can think of where that worked out well was The Breakfast Club, with Emilio, Sheedy, and Nelson being like 25 and AMH and Ringwald being legit teens. Didn’t seem jarring.

I've never gotten around to seeing that one, and I was a little over 2 years old when it premiered in theaters.

Yeah before my time too but watched it quite a bit as a kid in the 90s. Has sort of a timeless quality to it and, along with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, I think it’s my favorite John Hughes films. Worth your time. Not all of it holds up but it’s a very entertaining film.

It was in some spoilers I saw. It said Tatum was born at some point before Scream 4. And this takes place a few years after Scream 6. I know each movie is basically set in "Present Day" but it made specific mention of a time jump after 6. So this could technically take place in 2027-2030. And the reason was because they needed time for the daughter to be aged up enough.

The daughter could be 3 feet taller than Sidney and I don't think that's a big deal. Lots of kids are taller than their parents, and lots of kids become taller when they are young. It's a non-issue for me.

As for where Sidney's husband and kids were during Scream 4, clearly at home wherever home is. When Sidney returned to Woodsboro in 4 it was part of her book tour. Authors don't typically cart their entire family around during book tours. And I'm sure Sidney only planned on being there for a couple of days before moving on. She didn't count on there being another killer. Hence why she didn't have her husband and kids with her.

Liked all of them except the second so will definitely watch this.
