As you go forward there's times where it might seem like the show is dragging (I think that's where the "season 1 was awesome but seasons 2 and 3 fell off" critique comes from), but even when a stretch of an episode is slow there's still stuff to be gleaned. The series is very much about the lingering mood and atmosphere that frames the events. There's an underlying tension to everything and this tension pretty much defines the story

It blew my mind when I looked up the ages of the actors and saw that John is older than Danny irl. I remember thinking when I first started watching the show that they kinda screwed up the casting because John is only supposed to be like 2 yrs younger than Danny yet he looks about 10 years younger

I wondered about that as well but I figured they wanted to make Danny appear to look run down like hes had a hard life.
