i've lived in Missouri, Virginia, and South Carolina.

also spent an entire summer in iowa/illinois/ohio visiting relatives

but i feel you, judging a place w/o ever being there is totally different

edit: i wouldn't mind the midwest/south if i was in a populated/metropolitan area. yes, that even includes shitholes like Little Rock, Memphis, St Louis, Milwaukee. that's a helluva lot better than like the Ozarks, or Menonite Ohio/PA or virtually the entire state of Texas not in a city
