I have very little knowledge of hockey history or what (if anything) the numbers mean. But looking at Lemieux' and Gretzky's stats and awards, it looks like saying Lemieux is better than Gretzky is kind of like saying Allen Iverson is better than Jordan or Reggie Jackson is better than Ruth.

The 92-93 season was arguably the best ever under the circumstances, he was diagnosed with hodgkin's lymphoma, he played 60/84 games winning the scoring title by 12 points the 2nd and 3rd place finishers played all 84 games. Most people have Lemieux as the second best player ever.

I'll definitely take your word for it. Like I said, I have no idea what the context of the numbers are, or if/what they mean. I just looked them both up after people were saying he was better and Gretzky's numbers kind of dwarfed his. Plus he had more titles and Hart trophies. Then at the bottom of NHL Reference page, they had a 'similarity scale' where Gretzky's numbers, after they each had a similar best year, were better by a pretty wide margin every year following (in fact, Gretzky's 5th best year was better than anyone's 2nd best). But Lemieux' were better than everyone else's on the list, so it makes sense he's probably 2nd all-time. Unless you're a big Gordie Howe fan.
