The NFL percentage of air time is a actually going down. It peaked in 2010/11 IIRC. It used to be non-stop baseball post-super bowl when I was a kid, but now the NFL owns that period as well.

Although the popularity is as high as ever, coverage has peaked and viewership is down. TV revenue is teetering and I doubt you'll ever see a ridiculous deal like ESPN's monday night football. ESPN definitely won't have the money to renew even at the current terms.
