I'm about a 16 handicap now but I've been playing and practicing for like 20 years.
lol when I first started, I was so fucking terrible. driving range was an adventure. a round of golf took forever.
Exactly why I don't play, I just hold people up and it takes me as long ot play the front 9 as it takes most people to play 18.

TBF - to be really good at anything, there isn't a lot of time to fuck around with other sports. I think you used to hear about guys who played football playing basketball as well, but it happens less and less. Only so many hours in the day.

Once I got serious about my sport, no more downhill skiing. Kind of an old rule of thumb. You spend years training and then you get injured fucking around on the slopes with your friends and lose an entire year to injury.
Yea, but in baseball, overuse leads to arm and shoulder injuries that end careers.

Old baseball coach of mine played catcher at USF, had the home run record for a while, and his career was ended due to rotator cuff surgery, his arm went completely dead after that.

Yea, I had elbow surgery when I was 15, I still can't bend my left arm straight, it will forever be stuck in a 45 degree angle, I had my surgery done by Coco Eaton the Rays surgeon, and my little brother had TOmmy John at the age of 14, and that year off is what paved his path to pain killers and selling drugs.

Most kids I know these days have had Tommy John surgery, I've told a few people in the baseball thread this story, but my brother played AAU ball for 8-15 years old on Lance McCullers team, and his dad was assistant coach, his mom and dad put him on a pitch count from the time he was 8, would never allow him to go over a certain amount of pitches. They actually lost a huge tournament one time because the mom bitched out his dad because he reached his pitch count, so his dad pulled him and the relief pitcher blew the game.

Year round is just way too much, I'm sure umpiring sucks, kids are fucking assholes.
I love umpiring, but I love the game. Kids are real easy to scare into line if they get mouthy. It's the men's leagues that are fucking awful. I barely do them anymore. Just not worth it if there are any other games to do.

Parents/coaches are the real psychos. What's funny is, I do all ages 8 year olds up to 45+ men's leagues. Other the 20's and 30's men's leagues, they're all fun. But where you're most likely to get psycho coaches/parents is either in the really good young kids games, when it's maybe the parents' first year in really competitive ball. and then in the high school age rec leagues where the kids are fucking terrible. It's like the parents are trying to make up for not teaching them when they were younger or something.

lol, I play beer league softball and I feel bad for the umps, bunch of fucking drunk guys trying to relive their high school glory screaming at umpires making $25 a game. It's pathetic, and then almost every game, especially in tournaments, there's almost a fucking fight.

If shit goes down, I'm the first one to leave, I ain't fighting over a fucking mens league game because you need to keep your ego and pride in check lol

And parents that micro manage their 11 and 12 year old kids, because they live in some obscure reality where they think their kid is actually going to make the pros, used to piss me off.

some people have never even met their half brothers and sisters.

Never done softball, but lol at $25 a game. Yeah, the 18+ and Under 25 leagues are brutal. 25+ isn't much better. They're not drunk, but they all act like they're being scouted or something (they're not). Every single call gets mouths going. I think they're mostly pissed they didn't get to go pro. 35+ most of them are over it, but they still think it's super important. 45+, they just bag on each others wives all game. It's hilarious. 60 year old knuckle ballers pitching.

Besides not being drunk, that sounds exactly like softball lmao

Difference is, you actually get quite a few former pros and guys that actually made it far that come out and play.

It's hilarious that some of the better softball players I know, absolutely sucked at baseball. A team I play against pretty often, and lost to in the championship of the last tournament I played, won the USSSA nationals for slowpitch softball this year, and they only had one guy on there team that was any good at actual baseball. We lost to them and every kid on our team either played some type of pro ball, or college, excluding me, even though I did make an NAIA team, I just didn't have the credits to transfer there.

My wife and i are totally the opposite. Still haven't put our kids in a single competitive sport. They are only in lifestyle sports (as I call them): dance, climbing, and hiking. And It's kind of funny (or not) since I never did any lifestyle sports, only competitive sports, from the age of 5, and my wife was a college/competitive rower.

If I have a son, I'll probably put him in basketball/baseball, won't let him play football until High School.

My niece is getting ready to start T-ball next year, and will eventually transition to softball, she's going to be good at something though, her dad is one of the most athletic people I've ever seen and she's projected to be 6'2, the women on both sides of her family are all over 5'10, including my mother who's close to 5'11

That's pretty crazy. my wife is 5'10" -- she hated it for a long time.

Yea, she's only 4 and she's already bigger than some of the 2nd and 3rd graders she routinely plays with.

My friends daughter is 7 and is also a big kid, and my niece is eye to eye with her.

Some of the guys in the 25+, 35+, and 45+ leagues did play minor league ball and all of them played in college or competitive leagues at that age. The ones who actually played pro ball are, unsurprisingly, the calmest.

I played softball for company teams, etc. I never liked it. Wish I had known about these baseball leagues when I got out of college. I didn't know they existed until I started umpiring. I can't imagine I'd still be able to play though. It's been 20 years since I got to play real, competitive baseball. I'm sure I'd suck.

There's a popular one here in Clearwater, and the college that I actually got offered to sign with sends a scout here every year to look at players under 25. It's a team in Alabama and half the kids on the team are from this area lol

I never played in the league though, I just got a tryout off hear say and a few friends that were on the team at the time.

I coached kids soccer for a couple of years. The parents in general were intolerable. One kid was very, very skilled and his dad never said a word. One day I said to the dad, "hey XXXX is really skilled". THe dad just said, "he has fun playing. He has no speed and isn't going anywhere, but he likes it."

Turns out that the dad played in the English 1st division (before they called it the "EPL"). He never told us what do or made any comments even though he must have known that we were clueless morons.

lmao, that's pretty awesome. I can only imagine someone who played in the EPL watching americans try and coach/play soccer.
