A British tourist just got murdered in SF. He was being mugged and tried to hold onto his bag so the P.O.S. Mugger stabbed him in the head and killed him.

It happened two blocks from my old apartment. Where it happened isn't the worst part of the city, but even as a local I wouldn't have been walking there after sunset (he was murdered at 8:30 pm).

The problem is I saw the scenario that lead to this situation a hundred times. For some reason a lot of European tourists stay at the base of Nob Hill (one of the richest part of towns) and just above the Tenderloin (the ghetto). This between spot is affectionately called the Tender Nob. It's gentrified and safe, but it's just a block from drug deals, prostitutes, gangs and muggings. Unfortunately, their maps don't say, "Danger, don't go down this way." In fact if you look at the Map, the tenderloin is often the most direct route to trendy areas.

Also, you will get a lot of misinformation about the tenderloin. If you are a foodie and are looking up fun restaurants, there are tons in the tenderloin in little gentrified pockets. But when I say little, I mean little. Like this corner is safe, but halfway down that block is an alley where people wait for straggling tourists to mug.

Honestly, if you are not a local who knows when and where not to be in the tenderloin, you should not be in the tenderloin.

Here is another thing to watch out for: when you are looking for a hotel, many many many hotels that are in the tenderloin will advertise with the line "walking distance from Union Square" a popular shopping district. If you see that line, then find the cross roads and then type tenderloin on google maps and see if it falls within. You want to be about two blocks away from the tenderloin.

Okay, sorry for the rant. BTW ignore the cool, hipster locals that say the tenderloins not that bad. a) they're trying to sound cool and b) they know where not to go and they don't go there.

Thanks for the info, sure it would be helpful for any Europeans heading there.

got a like from me

Thanks for the suggestions- sux that crime can be so blatant. SF can be a great place, but has its problems like many metropolitan areas in the US.

I actually read an article 8 years ago, before my first trip to San Francisco about the very same warning you just gave.

I believe it's called Tender Nob for reasons other than mentioned

Lots of crackheads and shit in the Tenderloin. I would only go there with groups or during the day.

Thought you were talking bout niners who suck.

Bit, ppl are assholes and sad.

good looking out, man. ye, i used to stay in NorCAL and like you said you really have to know what you are doing when going to certain places. it is amazing how much of a difference in terms of safety it can make just going SLIGHTLY in one direction or another.

Thanks for the post TS. I was actually staying at the Parc 55 when I visited San Francisco last month and I took a wrong turn into the tenderloin while I was on a stroll. Crazy how different the city can look within a five minute walk. My intuition told me to walk back towards Market St..haha

If it smells like shit then you made it to the tendelion, buddy. It is always a good idea to never look like a tourist when you're in a shitty ass neighborhood.

I don't know the area very well. I had a company party in Union Square and had to walk through it once. Looked very shitty. Is it worse than Hunters Point?

The only shitty part of town I go through on a regular basis is 16th. Its filled with homeless people and drug dealers.

Always funny to listen to people talk about how wherever they are from is the roughest area. But it's even funnier when the place is called Tenderloin.

I ended up in the Tenderloin once with some people destroyed off of a pot brownie. Needless to say that was an uncomfortable situation. We ate somewhere and walked around briefly. No issues tho.

If I go to the City it's either Haight/Ashbury for Magnolia or SOMA for Cellarmaker. Or a Giants game.

I was from the tender nob. The tender nob wasn't rough (that sounds bad). But be my guest and walk down 6th street at 9 pm.

Is there a particular minority that inhabits the Tenderloin or is it tough gays?

Another quick warning: if you are going to the city to see a big play or musical, you are almost certainly going to a theater in the tenderloin (hence bad parts of town are often called the theater district. Hence hence Batmans parents were killed in the theater district). That's fine, but take your cab/uber to the front and leave from the front. And don't say, "well we should get their early and walk around to find somewhere to grab a bite to eat."

The tough gays are at the far end of Market St, which kinda enters the tenderloin from the back....not even joking.
