A couple of nights ago I watched San Andreas for the first time.

I actually didn't even know what the film was about for the longest time. I just knew it was called San Andreas and had The Rock. My assumption was that it was based on the GTA game, but it turns out that it's actually a pretty decent disaster film.

Probably the two things that stood out to me most were:

1. The Cast. I knew the The Rock was in it, but then I saw Carla Gugino and was like, "Well that's a solid addition." And then I saw Paul Giamatti and I was like, "Hold up, Paul Giamatti's up in this shit?" And then I saw Alexandra Daddario and I was like, "Alexandra Daddario's up in this shit too?!" (She is indeed up in that shit, being nearly 30 years old and playing a girl who's supposed to be just about to go off to college.)

Hell, even Kylie Minogue stops by for a bit part.

2. The Effects. The effects work is really solid here. I was very impressed with the quality and think the movie is probably worth watching just for that.

Here's an interesting vid on that, BTW:

All in all, I thought it was a pretty-good-but-not-great entry in the disaster genre. A solid B-tier entry, hanging out with the likes of The Day After Tomorrow.

Anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

Not a big disaster film fan nor a big fan of the Rock but I liked this movie. Very fun and very Daddario.

Would rather have the thread talk be about 2005 San Andreas

Not even worth a thread or discussion. . This isn’t IMDb

How many Cores out of 10 would you give it?

7 cores

Like you said the effects are really good and me living in california/LA makes it that much more interesting. They been talking about the "big one" since I was a kid so I think its something that is always in the back of your mind when living out here

Supposedly there's a sequel in the works, but from what I read, the hard part is finding a space in Johnson's schedule to fit it in.

But the movie did well financially. It made almost half-a-billion dollars on a $110 million budget.

I wanted to like it. I love disaster movies

But it fell short imo. Effects were cool. That director has a bright future.

It was alot better than Geostorm

It had good action. I liked it better than 2012 and the Day After Tomrrow.

I didn't love GeoStorm but I didn't hate it either. I thought it was okay, which is better than most people are willing to give it credit for.
I couldnt finish it.

I actually liked 2012. And the day after tomorrow. Im patiently waiting for another good disaster movie

Definitely better than 2012, which was a total piece of shit. I'd put it on par with The Day After Tomorrow in terms of story, though I preferred the effects of San Andreas.

I actually liked 2012.

Literally one of the worst theatrical experiences I've had in my life. It just went on and on and on and I thought I was going to fucking lose it.

I'm patiently waiting for another good disaster movie.

It's a fun genre and I'm always down for a good one.

Hurricane Heist is out right now and it has some disaster movie elements, though it's hard to call it a "good" movie.

When the last local blockbuster went under, I went the last day they were open and asked them how many movies i could get for $20.

The dude working smoked a joint with me in the store and gave me a trash bag of dvds without cases.

I didnt have internet back then and i was extremely poor. For whatever reason i found 2012 to be very rewatchable.

Ive probably watched it 20 times. Its a fun movie. Maybe lower your expectations to jack shit and youll enjoy it lol

That's a good story.

As for 2012, well, glad you liked it. I have seen other people say they did as well.

Personally, I have it near the bottom of my ranking, well below entries like Twister, Dante's Peak, The Day After Tomorrow and San Andreas. I'd even put it under Poseidon and Volcano.

I thought half the movie looked like a cut scene from a video game, just wasn't that interesting, and went on for way too long.

I like all those movies except San Andreas.

You seen previews for Rampage yet? That looks fun

CGI shitshow that was completely implausible and somehow boring.

I never played this when it came out because my ps2 broke and I had a GameCube as well, so I just stuck with that and San Andreas was never released on that platform. I bought the remastered version for my 360 and tried playing it after I beat GTA V and I couldn't get passed how crappy the graphics are compared to now. Graphically this game did not age well.
