Wrestling has more than 2 Goats, but wrestling is a much more popular of a sport than Sambo. Sambo is practiced in a much smaller geographic region, by a lot less people, so 2 all time greats speak volumes. Wrestling is great base as we all know, but you still have to train a fighter a myriad of other skills to go with it before he transitions to the mma. With Sambo, there is not much you really have to teach someone, he can transition to compete in mma tournaments straight out for the most part (besides rule adjustments and such).

Yet no other sambo guys can even sniff a title while numerous wrestlers have been champ and continue to be top 10 at multiple weight classes

While wrestling is obviously effective, one of the reasons it has been so utilized in MMA is the popularity and infastructure around the world. If you could somehow swap NCAA wrestling and olympic wrestling with Sambo, sambo would abaolutely dominate.

The problem with this theory is that Khabib is way more than Sambo. He is highly trained in multiple disciplines and is really good at stringing them together.

Sambo is really just wrestlers who also do a bit of striking and submission grappling on the side. The major difference is that Russia right now is significantly better than the US, or really any other country, at wrestling. If you look at the top submission grapplers, none of them are Russian. Top kick-boxers, none of them are Russian. Top wrestlers, all of them are from South Russia or North-East Europe/North-West Asia. They are wrestlers, who also hit some mitts and practice some subs from a young age.
