The biggest problem for renewable sources is irregularity of energy supplies from sources like wind and solar power...
Compensation method widely used today is pumped storage power plants. Where water is pumped up in upper basin when production is in excess vs demand ...and released when demand is high.
Plus such plants are cheapest and most durable emergency power source usable also for power plants blackstart and frequency balancing in grid...

Not in all areas is possible to build these for technical etc reasons...


Electricity might be used to produce hydrogen. More clean fuel than natural gas. This might be stored and used when it will be needed to use.

Simple explanation: when production will exceed demand, surplus electricity production might be used to produce hydrogen with simple process...
