"According to Wikipedia: The average recoil force of the GAU-8/A is 10,000 pounds-force (45 kN), which is slightly more than the output of one of the A-10's two TF34 engines (9,065 lbf / 40.3 kN each). While this recoil force is significant, in practice a cannon fire burst only slows the aircraft a few miles per hour in level flight"

For a tank, the recoil shouldn't matter. If you mount it on a lighter frame? Watch out! :)

Oh wow I thought depleted uranium rounds were outlawed after the first gulf war. That shit contaminates areas for eternity.

It still to this day is part of the reason for so many deformed babies.

"Victims of a war they never saw | | The Guardian" https://amp.theguardian.com/theguardian/1999/jan/10/guardianweekly.guardianweekly1

Ashahine, a senior gynaecologist at the Saddam Hussein Children's Hospital in southern Iraq, is not shocked. If it is not a child without a brain, then maybe it's one with a giant head, stumpy arms like those of a thalidomide victim, two fingers instead of five, a heart with missing valves, missing ears. The deformities have one thing in common: they are congenital.

In Iraq the health authorities say that at least three times more children are being born with congenital deformities than before the Gulf war. Now, in both Britain and the United States, veterans of that same war are coming forward with reports of sick and dying children. In Britain the Ministry of Defence has agreed to a $1.3 million independent survey of reproduction that will cover every veteran that served in the Gulf.

The problem is that when DU-tipped bullets hit a target they explode, sending millions of tiny radioactive particles into the atmosphere. "This is when it becomes most dangerous," says Arjun Makihani, the president of the US Institute for Energy and Environmental Research. Once released, the particles can be directly inhaled, can pollute the water table and enter the food chain, spreading radioactive pollution over thousands of square miles. Exposure to this kind of radiation, as well as to chemical pollution, can cause genetic damage because of the ease with which the uranium can cross the placenta to the foetus*. According to the US Department of Defence, at least 40 tonnes of DU were left on the battlefields of southern Iraq.

Depleted urianium can't explode at all.
It is used in part of armour piercing shell's core IF it is high velocity shell.
Usually such shell is like arrow with 20-40 mm diameter and does have fins.
When this is fired from smoothbore high pressure cannon ( like 120 mm and russian 125 mm tank smoothbore cannon, such arrow travels with 1300-1850 m/s speed.
When it hits armour, it is going in like hot needle in butter...
___
Next military application is ...to use it in tank's armour....as one from components...
___
Then...some shaped charge shells does have exp cave coating from depleted uranium....
Usually still it is copper, molybdenum alloys etc...not DU
___
However devil is not only evil.
DU in some applications for nuclear R&D etc....is used as ...part of shield from radiation...

DU also is lesser radioactive than natural uranium metal.

Especially in modern times...
NU does have ~0,71-0,72% U235
Depleted uranium... ~0,2- 0,4% U235.

The longer uranium enrichment is used in this world, the more here for producers is lucrative to ...have low U235 % in tails ...
tails= mass remained after uranium is enriched...

Part of production is tails, with low U235%.
Part...= enriched uranium...
energy field usually is using enriched uranium with 1,9-6% U235 content....

BTW even HEU ( traditional ) isn't that dangerous...IF it isn't irridiated.....

F.e in nuclear industry 1945-1970 ies most shit happened when employees had been poisoned with...chemicals used .. not with radiation...

BTW USSR too had produced munition with DU...
For a tank was one model with shaped charge and DU liner ..
2? or 3?= these armour piercing fin stabilised anti tank stuff...

__
DU had been used also in 23-30mm munition...
While cheaper and not less efective for these appeared tungsten alloys cores...

USSR production of ammunition with depleted uranium for tanks started on industrial basis in 1982 th.
Even when they had huge financial problems and stamps for soap, sugar, cigarettes and vodka....
they still in 1991 th managed to start produce 3БМ48 ; new ammo for 125 mm tank cannon with depleted uranium penterator...
It was better than 1982 th model cos had better armour piercing parameters.

There ofc is a bit reason to talk about Ukraine too.
Since Sadam was more interested to have just more tanks to oppress peasants and USSR exported to non Warshaw pact countries 3 rd tier older ammo for tanks...
Iraq mainly had 1970 ies early part ...ammo for tanks....usually steel penterator.

While even if Russia now is using USSR era ammo for tanks in Ukraine.....
I'm almost confident that they does have huge stocks with soviet era ammo with depleted urianium for 125 mm tanks cannons....

Ukraine was place where famous in East Germany tanks T-64 and T-80 had been produced.
And yeah...stationed in East Germany tanks had ammo with depleted uranium penterators...since 1982 th...

4 posts in a row. Bro you got problems. You should just join the ukraine army.

I think that you have problems not I.
Watch out bro a over active mod might remove your post saying this is derailing this thread unless it's a liberal point..

So I thought Biden said it would take 30 days for Putin to give into sanctions ? I wonder what USA long term involvement and strategy is on this

Now some ppl in Germany told that most likely sancions on Russia will have better effect next year ..

+ EU is preparing next package with sanctions and most likely existing sanctions too will be improved in order to prevent evasion...

Will see how will work sanctions on Belarus and Russia.

Yea very telling the 180 EU has done on green energy compared to fossil fuels. The world is 80% on fossil fuel , growing countries China only cares about progress and success which has hardly any green energy
