But basically they can now or will be able to push in soon from the East. They could not before if Mariupol was still resisting because if their front moved past the City, rockets could far from beyond and they would be taking hits from behind. Same with Kharkiv. But once Mariupol is leveled, they can push in an then start shelling Kharkiv from the south. Along with being able to also start shelling the Southern urban areas that are resisting, they can start shelling them from North of them.



Incase of the paywall/needing to log in, here is the image without the city names, the red circles being cities. But as you can see they are pushing to surround Kharkiv now more from the south. Along with now having the northern flank of those southern cities now exposed as they are able to push in. If that new advantage allows them to make even more gains, they may be able to really push in and eventually position to Kiev's south East, further encircling it.

The official cited the examples of Ukrainians fighting to take back Kherson, as well as pushing Russian forces from the northeast of Mykolaiv to have to reposition south of the city.

The official cautioned that the US cannot say whether these moves are part of a “larger operational plan” by the Ukrainians or not.

The Ukrainian defense has been “nimble” and “agile,” according to the official.

That article only reallu says they are TRYING to take back territory, and seem to only really be taking any sort of ground back in the one southern city, Mykolaiv. This actually supports exactly what I am saying and what was reported in that NYT tweet/article, which also stated they are holding off the Russians in the south. However, your article doesn't mention anything about the East, around Mariupol. Again, if Mariupol is no longer a threat, the Russians can then push in and start hitting a place like Mykolaiv from a new front from the North East, rather than just from the south/south East.

That is exactly what I was saying by taking up new strategic positions to further strike places in the south and more west.

Because he's not wrong, and trying to sue claiming he is would open up some pretty inconvenient investigations. Most of his sponsors already left, so they can't really cancel him that way either, so the play is just to trash him.
