Would it be better to run immediately before or immediately after training?
When I say training I mean grappling for 1.5 hrs btw

No one can answer this for you. It's probably personal preference. I'd run afterwards personally.

Generally running after. Aerobic training releases chemicals that stop the synthesis of protein by the body, so if its an intense running session its best to have as big a gap as possible.

After, for the sake of your training partners so you're not all sweaty and smelly.

Ill go against the crowd and say before. When I run before training Muay Thai and Ill be in Thailand in 4 days, there, we run every morning before training. Works well for me and everybody there.

I used to run before like early in the morning and then lift/grapple later the evening. I did that because I felt my running felt better fresh and it didn't seem to take away anything from the two other.

This is just how I think of it: If you run before you're a bit more tired which forces you to use better technique. The same if you lift right before training.

this is probably totally wrong

im from the boxing school of thought and the mantra was run early in the morning before you eat do 3 miles or so with sprints in it. it is a waste if you miss your run and you can make up for it by doing extra rounds on the rope or sparring extra rounds.

How long will you be running for? Why will you be running? At what intensity will you be running? how many days a week will you be running? What is your priority?

These are all important factors when making your decision.

Running in the morning and training later in the day won't be an issue unless he's running half marathons, or not eating/drinking all day, or really out of shape.

Running in the morning then doing another activity at night usually causes no issues unless you run like a madman first.

If you're doing it all in one big block, a good guidline to workout order is Warmup->Power training->Max Strength training->Hypertrophy/Endurance lifting->Cardio

I wouldn't want to grapple immediately after running, but every Sunday I used to wake up, eat breakfast, go lift weights, run 2 miles, take a shower, eat lunch, then go to BJJ class. I never had any problems with doing that.

Which do you need, more strength or more endurance? Do that one first. Of course, you could run in the AM and lift in the PM, or vice-versa.

I've always felt like the second paragraph is faulty logic. Why not just train yourself to be able to not spaz out and to control your power during training? When a person spars they aren't told to go for a jog first so they are too tired to throw full power shots. They are just to control their power, go light, take it easy etc.

I do not know which is "better" for you.

What I can tell you is from experience I never wanted to run after thrashing myself on the mats nor did any of the guys I trained with.

Thus, I ran in the morning, before training. Not more than 3mi and once a week I would do a longer 5mi on a day I was not training. Worked for me. But you ought to consider your own goals, and time schedule, that may be the determining factor. If you don't have a choice and have to get your road work in immediately before or after training. Then I recommend you do it before.

If I'm doing distance running, it will be either be several hours before a more intense training session (weights or grappling) or immediately after. If I'm doing sprinting, I'll do that immediately before & use it as a warm-up.

This was just published:

Which Comes First? Resistance Before Aerobic Exercise or Vice Versa? (ACSM'S Health & Fitness Journal)

TL;DR: do aerobic first if you care more about aerobic power gains, strength first if you care more about strength and muscle mass gains. Allow as much time as possible in between for better results. If you are extremely weak/have extremely low muscle mass, doing strength first is better for both endurance and strength.

So basically, whatever type of adaptation you want to emphasize, do that type of training first, while you're fresh.
