You'll probably get better responses in the conditioning forum. PM a mod and have them move it (or just let the gentle lads of OT "answer" your question, up to you)
As far as I know, you'll be okay if your joints are strong. Do you do any squats/ weight training on the legs? That will help reduce injuries, from what I understand.

This is a good answer. Now, cut your losses and don't come back in this thread, it's gonna go south from here.

no i dont. just hit the 100 pund bag for an hour a day and do moderate upper body training

IF you run 5 Miles everyday , thats not smart man. I could understand if your training for a marathon ok. But your not. Your trying to get back in shape. Im sure you burnt the fuck out. You should Run 5 one day, Do core exercises the Next day, Rest. Then back again. Let your body rest too man. I think your trying to hard & you can get hurt or sick. Get some BJJ man. ITs great.

I RUN a mile about 3-4 X/week. I am fighting next weekend. You should be lifting weights, rolling, hitting the bags in rounds and running. Runnign alone isn't going to do it for you. You need to develop your muslce density and build your lungs up from sprinting. Jogging helps sure, but runnig more simulates fighting than jogging.

Jump Roping is the shit too man. SOme Cardio Pulmanary Exercise will get your adrenaline pumping. I jump from foot to foot for about 15 seconds , then I high Knee my skips for about 10 seconds , then slow back down , the up again. You be one sweaty mofo after about 10-15 minutes of skiping.

Mens Health says 10 min of skiping = 30 mins of running.

moderate upper body training but no lower body? What are you, a bodybuilder turned fighter wannabee?

Read the stickies of both the conditioning and Strength & Power forums, NOW.

Where is the pain, your shins? If so, it'll pass...ice + ibuprofin

Is the pain in your muscles? If so, it'll pass...ibuprofin

I used to run an hour a day and two hours on saturday. I was running about 65 miles a week. I kept balance with pullups, pushups, situps. I was on a big kick for working out with my own body weight, not iron weights. I also threw in some plyometrics. That was the best shape of my life. Well it was then or when I was big into swimming.

But if your question is about 5 a day, every day, then I say that's fine. Your body will adjust.

If you're worried about your joints hurting then try swimming if you have an indoor pool nearby. You can do all the swimming in the world and you won't screw up your knees and ankles.

I think your issue is that you were good at running, including marathons, at a certain weight. Now it seems like you went from nothing to ~35 miles per week with no buildup. That, coupled with the fact that you weigh more than you were before, is leading you to a quick burnout. However, you feel like since you have the muscle memory to be able to do it, then you should.

I would recommend cutting back to an every other day / 3 days of 5 and then one day of 6-10 and keep it there for about two months. On your other days, do some sort of upper body workout, or your skill training. When you get used to that, you can start adding in another day or more complimentary conditioning.

LOL. 5 miles is nowhere near marathon distance.

I never run at all and I have a resting heart rate of 55. It's due to interval training. I suggest cutting down the runs to twice a week or so and doing HIIT and functional strength training in place of the running.

Good luck,

K...

How bad you can fuck your body up depends on two things; 1- Your current fitness level (were you running everyday and then decided to up the mileage) and 2- Where and what type of pain in your legs you have got (this tells you what potential injuries you have or will have).

Listen to your body. If you are HURT, do not run. If you are SORE, do a light run. Running is a high impact sport, and you are risking more serious injury if you try to run while injured.

If you don't know whether you are injured or sore, go see a doctor. 5 miles a day is a lot. Some folks can do it, but if you're having pain, your body is telling you something.

It actually might be worth your while to purchase an elliptical machine. They are non impact and you can go as intense as you want with them.

Running to me is very important but please don't run the same distance and speed everyday !

Aside from rest days, mix it up to target different aspects of the body's energy's system

a longer run, long intervals (800m to 1km), shorter intervals (50m - 400m), hill sprints, tempo runs all play a part in running conditioning plus stop you getting bored
