Donald Trump wants to keep it the same.

How can any person who actually works be in support of raising retirement to 70?

Most men in this country don't even live outside of a hospital to the age of 70.

The primary should have ended as soon as this fact came to light. Yet, no one is even talking about it.

Republicans have been wanting this for decades. On one hand no one wants to work that long; on the other, social security is straining and projected not to last after 2033. Its long been projected that the age would be increased for all those born post 1960 and theres is currently a system in which you get full SS benefits and a bonus if you work till you're 70.

So its not really a new or unexpected policy.

It's a barbaric policy.

70 year old people should not be working. They should be at home, raising grandchildren, relaxing...

50 years is too long for any career.

Cut SS benefits from the rich, people who have made 100k+/year their entire life don't need a SS check. People who have made close to that should have reduced benefits.

It's insulting. They've supported cutting taxes for people who inherit fortunes, but want people to spend more of their lives working. Retirement age should be lowered.

Fuck these guys

It's not seniors' fault that the system is broken

Even 65 is long enough
People working paycheck to paycheck and now are being told to grind another 5 years

I already have a strong resentment for these 3 goofs and this just adds to the slop

I'm fine with lowering the retirement age. 60-65 would be nice.

But I think taxes on inheritances (i.e. already taxed money that someone saved) is BS.

I don't think politicians are going to vote to cut off their own pensions. You could raise the contribution into from the current first 190 k of income to something like first 400'000+

Unless you are a Senator or SCJ :)

Whoa. I agree with the first part. But not the last part. It's not fair to take a bunch of SS taxes from high earners and then say "no, no, you don't get any of that." $100K isn't what it used to be.

If the government needs additional tax revenue and its options are raising taxes on a school teacher or nurse making $60,000 a year or raising taxes on a millionaire or billionaire who has done nothing to earn their wealth, I'll choose the latter.

Congreemen should look in a mirror before judging others

Yep. That's absurd. Serve 1 term as a Senator and you get a pension for life, right?

5 years and they can cash out at 62

If they work 25 years they can cash out immediately after

Fucking bullshit. Ok if you are a supreme court judge, everybody else forget about it.

Is it Millenials fault that social security is in the state it's in?

Look, 100k was just a figure I threw out there.

200k, 300k, 400k, whatever. Make it so that "The Rich", don't get the benefits of the "Safety Net".

Good. Social security is a socialist ideal. If you believe in capitalism you should be a fan of abolishing medicare, social security and any retirement age. Am I doing it right?

70's not that bad. Certainly longer than I want to work but I think there are plenty of people who are productively working into their late 60's.

My bigger question is about the job market. I would think you want to transition these people out of the work force so that you can reduce the labor supply, increase demand, and shift some negotiating power back to the workers. But I haven't read much on that so I don't know how plausible that is.

No.

While trying to imitate a conservative, you have neglected more nuanced aspects of conservatism, such as the fact that social security is paid into throughout a worker's career, and that allowing a worker to retire frees up positions for less experienced, younger workers.

What companies actually WANT 70 year olds working for them? Very, very few. Imagine if companies were forced to keep these people employed?

Yep, beyond the fact that the people who need it the most don't generally live that long (or not much longer outside of hospital), an economy wants to encourage those at the top to move aside to allow the younger generations to move into higher positions.

Unless you want to double social security contribution its bound to happen sooner or later.
