Hay how would this fight go down and who would win?
I have Royce Gracie By UD or TKO. I say this because Royce had/has more striking skill then Renzo ever did. And is the bigger man in this fight for one time in his life.

Ironic you mention this.

I know the noobs are going to criticize me for not having a "source", but they definitely had a feud when I was training 15-20 years ago. It was common knowledge amongst everyone in the local mma community (which was very small at the time) and at my gym, including my instructor Dan Miragliotta.

The rumor part, which I cannot confirm or deny, is they settled their differences behind closed doors, with Renzo emerging as the victor. Take it with a grain of salt. I doubt it, but maybe there is someone here who trained in the NY/NJ area at the time who can confirm this.

I respect both of them but anybody who has watched MMA for a time would tell you that Renzo is a far superior grappler. Striking wouldn't even matter, they both would be beat by Shields is a kickboxing bout. Renzo is the better wrestler and the better grappler.

I would've picked him over Royce. If it they fought today... I don't know that's a tough one.

Honestly, I don't find that hard to believe.

I know the feud part is true.

Renzo was a decent striker... until Hendo KO'd him.

Renzo would school Royce.

I would pay 100$ to see that fight.

is he as much of a pigeon in that setting as he is as a ref???

ontopic, I think Renzo takes this fight, would love some more insight on this supposed behind closed doors match they had

Renzo has the more modern MMA experience; I got Renzo winning it.

Interesting.

I haven't heard this story, but then, there are a lot of stories...

But, stories aside, I'd say Renzo all the way.

He has a more balanced game in BJJ having been exposed to both sides of the lineage, Carlos/Helio in addition to his willingness to study and expose himself to other grappling arts. Also, his striking, though relatively poor, is better than Royce's, though Royce has improved leaps and bounds since his youth, unfortunately his body no longer can keep up with his added knowledge.

Renzo, there's nothing Royce can do in clinch or on the ground that can surprise Renzo in any way.

I wouldn't doubt it ,i recall Royce stating in black belt magazine article how he would teach Renzo respect after he stepped on an opponents head who was a judo champion who insulted Renzos wife or somethingafter the win at the World Combat Championship in the late 90's .I believe Rickson told him to apologise because of the bad rep the gracie name was getting and he did ,but im not sure. Ithink the guys head he stepped on was Spijkers???????

There's actually a story behind that. I think it was big Dan (Miragliotta) that told it to me, because he trained with Renzo on occasion and Renzo used to bring his new students over to our school to compete in amateur mma fights (including a very young Nick and Matt Serra).

Supposedly Spijkers' team were calling and harassing Renzo all night at the hotel, so he couldn't get any sleep. Even after Renzo changed rooms, they somehow still found out where he was and continued. By fight time the next day, Renzo was so pissed it appears he had no interest in any sportsmanship and stepped on his neck after submitting him.

I wouldn't judge Renzo too harshly though. Even though it was a bad move, you could tell he regretted it immediately and went to help him up. There have been moments where he's had a temper in the ring, but on a personal level, he was such a nice and friendly guy. I even played volleyball with him at Dan's block party many years ago. Lol

I was next to him at another table in N.Y watching UFC that the only sports bar carried it back in the day,i think it was Ortiz vs Evan Tanner for the middle weight belt .Tito won by viscious k.o on the ground .After the fight out of left field he called Renzo out and subtly issued a challenge to him ,Renzo looked like he wanted to jump through the screen .lol

I met Renzo once briefly in 1999/2000 and Serra in the elevator at Renzs, i think i actually put the idea in his head to start fighting bc i asked him if his adds of him fighting were real and he said no its just for promotion so i told him might as well do the real thing .lol At the time there was no real pay either so i didnt persue it ,

Wow, pretty interesting. I can understand your feelings. There was nothing financial to really gain at that time.

Another story with the Serra brothers: The night Nick and Matt fought in our school competition was pretty crazy. We actually had a close call with big Dan and Renzo. Nick had an armbar locked in and his opponent tapped. In the heat of the moment, Renzo said "that's it! Break his arm Nicky!" I don't know if he meant it literally, but Nick ignored Miragliotta (the ref), and kept trying to pop the elbow. Big Dan never put up with any of that nonsense in his school and punched Serra in the stomach, while bracing the other guys arm. When that happened, Renzo flew into the ring. Luckily, Renzo quickly came to his senses, stopped himself and apologized to Dan for what happened. Nick wanted to fight Dan, but Renzo calmed him down quick. I can't imagine what would've happened if they would've went at it. There would've been a massive brawl and their friendship would've been destroyed.

I've always respected Renzo and Royler back in the day.

Those guys literally took on anybody, while some of the others were a little more selective.
