Royce Gracie Seminar

I did one with him a few weeks ago.

It was a small group and we are all MMA guys so the seminar was MMA focused and I found it really good.

I loved the line "Why are you trying to submit him? punch him in the face".

He wore a Gi but everything we did was MMA focused and I think appplicable to MMA.
That said if he did do BJJ stuff I would have been disappointed.

And I am thinking seeing its Royce I would expect a MMA or self defence style, because he is the MMA Gracie.

Now that's cool. I would love to attend a Royce MMA based seminar.

Something about giving them without really knowing the student or his game and that if it's not from the students instructor it's not legit. I can see why their is an argument but who is anybody to question Royce if he thinks they deserve it ?

Dang. That's pretty nuts. Royce has come to our school and promoted guys. Any ideas how I can make sure I get a legit blue belt? I don't want to be apart of the problem or not have my belt recognised...

Wouldn't it just be a matter of your instructor agreeing with Royce and saying "yes you are blue".

If Royce gives you a blue it's legit and will be recognized. If he thinks you deserve it then you deserve it and I wouldn't think twice about it. The post on page 2 by Kent was a guy who's school is an affiliate with another organization(correct me if I'm wrong) and if it didn't come from someone in that affiliate it wasn't legit. Other than that it's just haters or people who have a moral problem with getting a belt from someone who isn't there on a daily basis to see how you perform.

So there is no documentation or certificate from Royce or even the instructor?

Should there be a certificate or am I reading too far into this?

I think some instructors give a certificate, but no, your belt is your qualification and a target for white belts :).

It was actually both things you were talking about, out of association is a big problem because of the differences in criteria, for my purple I had to test and show Robson techniques from any (and all) positions he called out as well as liniage history (took around an hour and a half) ... Our teammate that Royce promoted has a good guard and only a good guard (I mean if he plays anything else or you pass you win) and he only rolled from guard during the seminar ... While I hear what your saying and I respect my BJJ elders, this teammate truly wasn't a bluebelt ... Know what I mean?

Damn, that sucks. F**king politics. I would say if Royce gives you a blue it should be recognized.

Why? Why should Royce be handing out belts to other people's students when they came for a one time seminar?

When Royler came to our place, he didn't do any self defense stuff. He did sweeps mostly, and a darce choke from under side control.

I think what TS is talking about is the (stupid IMO) self defense stuff like defending a two handed choke while standing.

Similar to this?

^^ pretty close. This was in 2009, so I don't remember all the details he showed, but yeah, that's basically it.

From my experience, Royce tailors his seminars. If Royce looks around and sees a bunch of white/blues, you're doing simple techniques and self defense. If it's a bunch of higher ranks, you might get some fancier techniques.

I've been to 2 Royce seminars in the past 2 years and I'm about to attend a 3rd one next month. At the first two, it was a mixture. We did some self defense stuff, but he also taught some triangle counters / escapes, a couple takedowns, and a few sweeps. It was a pretty decent mix both times.

I would love to go to a Royce seminar - he's pretty much the main reason I started BJJ. And, despite what haters say, I would be very proud to hold rank under Royce Gracie.

He gives blues out like sweets, I wouldn't want one. I know loads of people who have them.

Well, I'm already a blue belt and not under Royce (I haven't even met him) so I have no dog in this fight but I'm pretty sure that's just a Brazilian thing. I've been told it's not uncommon in Brazil to see six month blue belts, but due to the scarcity of black belts who could promote in Europe/America when BJJ first arrived the blue belt has been put on a pedestal. In Brazil if your instructor thinks you're able to use BJJ to effectively defend yourself against an untrained but physically equal person then you're given a blue belt. I think Helio Gracie even once said "if you train with me twice a week for six months, then you're a blue belt", who can argue against that?

Royler was always a sport grappler though, right? It makes more sense to me that he would show sweeps and chokes. But imagining Royce doing a spinning darce from bottom side seems crazy. Royler was always one of my favorite Gracies.

Is this more or less the idea?

last Royler seminar was similar, self defense etc. maybe they mix it up
