Royce Da 5'9

I don't get it. Why isn't Royce at least as famous as Eminem..? Is it because he doesn't make commercial music? Too lyrical?
No rapper is as big as Eminem so that's an unfair comparison. He is the biggest selling rapper OF ALL TIME, by a large margin too. In fact, he is the biggest selling artist of the 21st century too, of any genre. There are only 4 albums that sold more than 30 million this century- and Eminem has two of them. The other two belong to Adele and the Beatles.

People have been saying this about Royce since Eminem, and the fact is, as much as you wiggers and suburban minorities like him, his music is fucking trash and he lost a rap battle to Mistah Fab. Get over it.

What a joke

Royce is a fraud

Royce has been one of my favorite rappers since I heard him trade bars with Em on Bad Meets Evil on the SSLP.

I believe he is one of the nicest lyricists of all time. He probably won't make a lot of Top 50 GOAT MCs because he doesn't have the sales and notoriety but I'd put him up there

Unlike 2-5 Royce has never failed on a track. This dude comes with 100% bars every single time and has out-rapped Eminem numerous times. Check out Above the Law, Fast Lane, Welcome 2 Hell.. 75% of the time Royce wins. Only white chicks and old people think Eminem is a better rapper.. Like come on..Really? Eminem is boring as fuck.. I don't know a single person that actually listens to his music more than once.

I dig Royce and agree he has outshined Em on several tracks but come on now. Em and Royce are like Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. They 'play' well together and while Steph is the bigger star Klay has 'outshined' him in numerous games. But Steph will go down as one of the greatest players of all time when it's all said and done. Klay will too just not on Steph's level.

LOL @ that dude calling me a wigger... Aright that was actually funny.

But still nobody can make a counter against Royce as far as actual rapping goes. Nobody in here made any type of legit argument. I kinda figured it would go this way though

I'll give you Eminem, Nas or Lupe.. Or black thought. Some of you weirdos into Tech 9.. That's about it.

1b Lupe? I don't get if that's a joke

You realize that you thinking Royce is the greatest rapper is purely your opinion and not one I have ever heard from anyone with any credibility in hip hop?

I stay out of hip hop discussions on Sherdog for exactly this reason

I actually respect that position.

Who are your best lyricists? Just wondering who is in your top 5 not trying to be a dick or start an argument

Dude, I would put Royce above Eminem skillwise. Greatness not about just skill. There's a lot of social context on top of all that.

I like the dude, he's nice but he's not in my top 5.

Don't expect to be taken seriously when you say things like, "Eminem is boring as fuck". He's objectively not. The freestyle I linked above alone shows that statement to be complete nonsense.

Royce probably didn't make it because he doesn't really have that it factor that makes entertainers blow. It's just like MMA, in that the popular rappers aren't necessarily the "best" (although they certainly can be).

I get what you're saying. I was a little drunk when I made this thread but I still would listen to Royce over Eminem but I recognize Eminem's fanbase is huge and he has way more hit songs. Royce just has a better sound to me. Lyrically Eminem will probably win, but he only releases an album once every few years while Royce just jumps on any track with any rapper and beats them lyrically. That's why he's in my top 5 personally.

That's true. No argument there. I GET why Eminem is more famous, but I still feel like more people need to actually give Royce a chance and check out his catalog. The dude has so many bars you could write a rap dictionary with his music.

I feel like hip hop is in trouble when people don't respect dudes like Royce. He has been consitently dope for like 20 fucking years.. How many rappers can say that

I think when it comes to best or greatest discussions there has to be a hardcore of say, 15 emcees that can trade places depending on who is making the list, but the core of that list should stay the same.

And the best/greatest is so much more than just the people that you think should be there, it takes into account impact/era/output/longevity etc etc

I tend to stay away from these discussions as there are a lot of bull headed people coming up with shit when they were'nt even alive when rap music began, and that counts for a lot. You say your top 5 and they say 'No, it's...' like they know the correct answer.
I'm a jazz cat these days as much as anything, and for me to sit here and say Coltrane is the best hands down is just silly, as I wasn't around to really see the impact he had on the music and outside of the music.

Anyway, this is why I don't write much about hip hop any more as I can go on for hours, it's how I came up in the 80's.

I think the top 15 lets say must consist of Nas, Rakim, KRS, Ice Cube, Black Thought, Biggie, G Rap, probably LL, Jay Z and 2 Pac as well. But they can move around a lot.
Gun to head if I had to pick 5 it would be Rakim, Nas, Ice Cube, Biggie & KRS ONE, again all based on their impact at the time and the importance of their releases not just in hip hop but in musical culture and culture and society on the whole, as much as mic skills.

However, I prefer to talk about favorites, and my favorite rappers are markedly different.
AG
Black Thought
Ice T
Kool Keith

Also De La Soul as a collective would be about as high as you can get on list also. They were THE perfect combination to me

rest of the top 10 would be Chuck, Ice Cube, Mos Def, Scarface, Biggie, Rakim

probably!

TLDR - this is why I don't talk about hip hop too much, the history of it is too important to me and is way bigger than mine/your/their opinions on who's best

peace

Who? What?

Lmao all this dick riding for Royce? He's not even that good, deece bit not god tier. Are you a wannabe groupie or something?

I mean he was alright with slaughterhouse but Budden was where it was at with them.

Bad meets Evil is such an underrated album

Best combo of lyrics and great tracks is Rakim. Shout out to Special Ed, and the 5ft Assassin.
