Didn’t the winner of the Rumble get a title shot at WM? Why was Flair given the title for winning the Rumble?

Think I have the Super Nintendo game based on that Rumble.

I went to the one the year after that. Got me a Macho Man poster and a Jake the Snake action figure. Was pissed that Yokozuna won it.

belt was vacated for some reason. It’s been too many years- something something Undertaker something something Hulkster

so the belt was up for grabs in the rumble that year. I think it’s universally considered one of if not the best Rumble matches though which is cool.

Flair is a legend.

I was never a fan of Flair. The Hitman was my favorite. Great on the mic and the excellence of execution.

Flair vs Macho title match at ‘92 Wrestlemania was legit as hell. heenan and gorilla Monsoon commentary was on point too.

Heenan decrying Savage cheating with the pinfall.

Monsoon: Oh c’mon Mr. Perfect was in that match almost as much as Ric Flair was!

I love Bret Hart. I’ll easily acknowledge both as legends but I’m a Bret Hart fan if you asked me who I rooted for as a kid.

Flair not giving guys like Bret and Foley their due in his autobiography did not sit well with me either.

Those were the days man. Just before they went into that slump for 4 or 5 years.

Did he just not mention them or did he have ill words?

don’t hold me to this but if I’m recalling correctly, he was outright critical. Basically categorized them as overrated with the notion that Bret had a basic skill set that he did well enough but there was no variation to the matches and Foley was like a stunt man.

If I’m wrong on that, my apologies but that’s how I thought he framed it.

Pretty messed up considering Bret was so good in the ring and Foley was way better than some spot guy. He’s had many classics.

I understand why people liked Flair but he was never spectacular. Bret, Razor, Shawn, Perfect, Rick Rude and a few more I believe were a step above. Flair oversold so much and even at an early age I knew most of his stuff was just bogus. But somebody liked Bret just bled for the sport. He gave it his all. I just hope he is taking care of himself. He’s suffered quite a bit in his life. In his interviews, you can hear just sadness in his voice.

I think Foley would be the first to admit his whole schtick was taking a beating. Ironically Flair gets the same criticism from me, it's always the same. Chop, woo, flop, knee pad, corner flip bump, figure four. I know Flair had some variation, but Bret would have too if he was working the top of the NWA. Flair wouldn't have done any better in the WWF at that time.

Can't be critical of Foley if you aren't willing to go to hell and back with him. One of the toughest guys on the planet.

Fuck the Rumble. War Games was my shit.

I only got to buy 2 PPVs as a kid. That was my first one and I recorded it and would watch that shit on a weekly basis. Then my mom's ex boyfriend recorded over it and I was ready to go to juvie to get my revenge.

Yeah it’s sad- I mean, at the end of the day, Bret probably feels fortunate to be around still in his 60s and get to spend time with his kids and his grandkids. A lot of his family members didn’t make it to that age.
But he’s certainly had to deal with a lot of pain, loss and his own health struggles.

I’m hoping he’s doing well all things considered. Great dude. Really one of the people that made me enjoy WWE in the 90s.

I was shocked by how bad WCW misused him/didn’t capitalize on his arrival. But in hindsight, that wasn’t shocking.

I think Foley is actually pretty regretful of his choices. He set the bar for punishment so high and a lot of guys have a hard time walking or remembering their kid's names because they tried to live up to him. The golden rule of wrestling was pop the crowd while doing as little as possible, breaking it shortened careers and lives.

Yep that's the addiction to the pop and how far guys are willing to go to get it.

If you're judging wrestlers strictly by their in ring abilities, then you're doing it wrong. None of the other guys you mentioned could hold a candle to Flair's promos, which is half the game, in my opinion. He got real heat during his heel runs, legitimate hatred, not just an indifferent dislike. His entire skill set as a whole puts him in league by himself.

When you think about the standard Foley himself set though- the crazy thing is he retired at what- 35 years old. I’d like to think that he made his money and got out young enough that he will ultimately not have to deal with the sheer number of problems that a lot of veterans of that career have. Wishful thinking maybe but I have to say I think Foley ultimately made the smart move in calling it quits when he did.

A lot of the guys you mentioned not only put themselves through hell but continue doing it well into their 40s.

I don’t think Foley is responsible for that trend though. He might just be the most popular figure of its ascendancy.
