I'm sorry to post this, but the first man to run sub-4mins for the mile has passed away at the age of 88.

Bannister was a fantastic human being. A legendary athlete who went onto become a neurologist of note. A few interesting facts about Bannister's 3:59.4 mile that make it even more astounding when you think about it.
* His sub 4min mile was in 1954 (64 yrs ago). He was in a university class and had to run to the track to make it in time for the attempt.
* Bannister's sub-4 min mile was run on a cinder track -- bits of rock that form an irregular surface, while he wore leather track spikes. The difference between modern hi-tech tracks and advanced track spikes vs what Bannister had is just ridiculous.
* no woman has ever run sub-4
* only 1300 men have ever run sub 4.
* Sub 4min miles have only been run a total of 4500 times.
